Adjustable Brightness Sunglasses
There are different darkness of lens. However, people can only choose one which suit them most. Is it really suitable to use in all situations?
Then, Some questions keep looping in my mind: Is it possible to make an user-centered sunglasses? How to let the users change the darkness of lens?
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
2017 BRAND NEW SUNGLASSES.
Inspired by Soul and Interacted with Light.
With fully utilized the characteristics of Magnet and the Polarized lens,
by twisting the Magnetic Clip-on to shift down the light transmittance of the lens, the World's First Adjustable Brightness Sunglasses has been coming up.
No matter outdoor or indoor activities,
it can handle well for you easily.
Just like your Soulmate,
the one who aligned with your soul and understand you well.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The user can twist the Magnetic Clip-on to shift down the light transmittance of the lens when they need. There are three levels of darkness. For example, user can shift down the light transmittance to the darkest when they go sun-bathing. And user can choose the color of the lens or pattern of the magnetic clip-on to match with their clothes.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in June 2016 and finished in September 2016 in Hong Kong, and was exhibited as finalist in The 18th Hong Kong Eyewear Design Competition in November 2016 and winner in The 3rd Shenzhen Fashion Eyewear Designer Award in December 2016.
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The frame is made by acetate which is more durable.
Double layer polarized lens is used so that it is able to change the light transmittance by twisting. The color of the lens is also able to change, users could even change the pattern of the magnetic clip-on.
The magnetic clip-on is made by titanium and there are eight magnets on it. So that the users can twist smoothly. And there is a chamfer for the users to hold tightly.
No matter the function or the appearance, the whole sunglasses is designed to be user-centered.

I have first interviewed people about their dissatisfied on existing sunglasses.
Most of the interviewees like to use the Transition Photochromic Lenses because it can be darker when the sunlight is bright. However, the lens change the darkness automatically, so they cannot choose how dark it is. And only black and brown color is provided.
Later on, I researched polarized lens. And I did a lot of experiment about the rotating angles of double lens to shift down the light transmittance.
The mechanism part is most difficult for me. I only learn a little bit theory about polarizer in high school. I first use the physics theory to design the sunglasses. When I started the experiment, I found that it is so difficult to make both sides the same. If the rotating angles of both lenses is different, it will become a 3D glasses. So I spend many weeks to settle the problems.
Besides, the weight of the magnetic clip-on is also a problem. Since it is made by titanium and there are eight magnets on it. So it may fall down when clipped. So I have to calculate the weight and try again and again.
