Kawarie Zabuton

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Japanese cushion

INSPIRATION:
Based on the origami picture-changing box, Tsumugu's "Changing Picture Floor Cushion" was inspired by Kurume Tsumugi, a traditional Japanese patterned cloth. Pull it out from the middle to change between the three di erent patterns. With the warm texture and traditional Japanese patterns, this is perfect for almost any modern usage.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The material can be used while enjoying with a variety of modern scenes a combination of texture and taste that feels warmth using Kurume cloth, a traditional craft. We propose you like spinning thread while feeling the transition of the beautiful season of Japan - a carefree life.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Feel like seeing, touching and imagining. The warm shade. You can keep using it lengthily. It's elastic and I'd like the seating comfort.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
It was completed as a research result of the graduation production of the university. In July 2015 we launched an individual business, the first prototype was manufactured in November 2015.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The shape  - Hexagonal return When it's folded in hexagonal-shaped and it's held from a center, 3 pictures appear repeatedly. Strange mechanism folding paper A change in the color and the design can be enjoyed so that a page of a picture book may be turned over. The fabric material - Kurume Kasuri is a term for ikat fabric woven in the area of Chikugo in Fukuoka,Japan. The method is invited by Den Inoue around 1800 in Kurume City. We can weave single or double ikat using Kasuri ikat yarn which has been dyed in advance. this method is called”Kukuri”. Kasuri ikat is normally cotton 100%. weaving width 37~38cm. Hand weaving and machine weaving. In 1957,KURUME KASURI was appointed to the important cultural property of the country. In 1976,KURUME KASURI was appointed to a Minister of Economy Trade and Industry. Core material - urethane form Urethane foam which is stronger than elastic sponge and strong in elasticity is adopted. Even if the posture becomes stable and I ease a burden to a lower back and sit down long, it's difficult to get tired.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
arent-child communication tool. I studied Japanese traditional crafts. The material which is strong and lasts long was studied. I was particular about the thing which are the thing made in Japan and the interior where the room is changed according to the change and the feeling, the case that the shape changes and the seating comfort.

CHALLENGE:
I was particular about made in Japan as the tool you can keep using for a long time and aimed at the sophisticated shape by the simplicity to which tiredness doesn't come.

PROFILE:
On the concept of the"tool""TSUMUGU"keeps using in daily living, concerning with a person, an article, a person, a place, a person and a person, items are being produced importantly. You can use combination of the texture which feels warmth and the interesting color for the material in present-day various scenes using the Kurume cotton cloth with a splashed pattern which are traditional arts and crafts while enjoying oneself. I'll propose the "polite living" by which thread is spun while feeling a Japanese beautiful seasonal change.

I am so excited for Misako Niwa for winning the A' Design Award for their incredible work, Kawarie Zabuton! This Japanese cushion is truly an outstanding piece of furniture design, and I am in awe of the unique properties that Misako Niwa has managed to capture in their design. From the traditional Kurume cloth material to the origami picture-changing box inspiration, it is clear that Misako Niwa has put in a great amount of research and effort into creating this work. The idea of a carefree life being conveyed through the spinning of thread and the feeling of the beautiful Japanese seasons is so special.
