DESIGN NAME: Ore 69 Interlocking Stud Earrings
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Interlocking Stud Earrings
INSPIRATION: Inspired by the naturally occurring solid element from which a metal or valuable mineral is extracted, the Ore 69 stud earrings are an interface between raw nature and technology; a contemporary expression of the elemental beauty of the natural world.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Ore 69 is an expression of the complexity behind simple forms. One of the most elemental curvilinear geometric shapes, a cylinder, is broken open, exposing its core.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Together the earrings form a pure cylindrical shape. The wearer separates the cylinder, revealing the interlocking internal fracture, thus a singular object becomes an asymmetrical pair of earrings.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project is part of a collection, started in December 2015 and finished in November 2016, inspired by and created on the Big Island of Hawaii.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Using realistic physics-simulation software, a cylindrical form is fractured into two individual, interlocking pieces. Implementing Stereolithography, the model is then 3D-printed into castable wax resin. The final piece is realized in noble metals (gold, 925 silver), casted and finished with the use of time-honored, artisanal techniques.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Material: 925 Sterling Silver, 24K Gold Vermeil
Finish: Mirror Polished & Sandblasted
Size: 9mm Diameter x 7.5mm Deep
Includes:
Concrete Jewelry Box
Protective Travel Pouch

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Our research for this project is based on the ever-changing natural environment of the living volcanic island of Hawaii. We studied various geological formations and volcanic rock types that are endemic to the island. Through the use of technology we were able to capture the raw essence of nature and translate the concept into wearable design.
CHALLENGE: Because the resolution of the 3D printer is much higher than the capability of human manufacturing techniques, numerous adjustments had to be made in order to fabricate the final design.
