| DESIGN NAME: Edge Dominos PRIMARY FUNCTION: Game INSPIRATION: Having played dominos for years and frustrated with the plastic sets on the market, industrial designer Andrew Perkins decided to create a new type of domino that maintained the essence of the classic game, felt great in the hands, was sustainably made and durable enough to be taken anywhere. Andrew set out to use industrial manufacturing to reimagine the game and create a minimal, modern and high quality domino. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Edge Dominos maintains the traditional domino number pattern and game play but innovates by reducing the design down to only the numbers and walls, with no material wasted. Travel-size and light weight, Edge works just as well on-the-go as it does around the home. The extruded aluminum structure combined with a strong black anodized finish and laser engraved aluminum number pattern ensures a durable design that is proudly made in the USA. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Edge Dominos have the traditional number pattern and are played just like any other domino set. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started August 2015 in San Francisco and was exhibited at NYNOW in January 2016. FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Toys, Games and Hobby Products Design |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Edge dominos are made differently from any other domino set. The tiles are all extruded from a solid block of aluminum, which is a zero waste process and the material is 100% recyclable. Each unique number pattern in the 28 piece set is laser engraved, selectively removing the black anodized finish to create bright, white and everlasting aluminum dots. The result is a quality domino that looks great, plays well and is 100% made in the USA. CHALLENGE: The most difficult aspect was bringing this design to production. There was extensive time spent refining the extruded shape and extrusion process. We broke 3 extrusion tools in the development of Edge Dominos.
