Medical treadmills are mostly for public use. They are used more often than personal treadmills. Thus, medical treadmills need more routine maintenance. The inspiration for this project was to design a treadmill that consists of less mechanical elements and can be easily assembled-disassembled and repaired.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Kardinero is a treadmill used in the ECG Exercise Systems and designed for the diagnosis of heart diseases. While designing Kardinero the focus was to create a treadmill that is durable and suitable for rapid assembly and disassembly. Furthermore, this treadmill provides easy access to control units in case of a breakdown thanks to its ease of assembly. Durability and desired mechanical advantages are provided by developing some exhaustive mechanical solutions.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Exercises are programmed and controlled by medical doctors and experts via Kardinero’s special software that can be loaded on computers. Therefore, the treadmill should be connected to a computer before use. The patients can easily step on the belt by the help of the handles placed on both sides of the treadmill. While exercising, patients might hold front handles or side handles. The position of handles can be adjusted according to patient’s physical properties, as they can slide back and forth.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Structural elements of product are stainless steel profiles. Wheels, legs, motor and transmission parts are mounted on this stainless-steel skeleton. To create a better look and connect handles and vacuum formed plastic closings with the skeleton, two types of aluminum extrusions are used. At the end of these extrusions, injection molded ABS parts are fixated to provide the perfection in details.

Main researches were made about the alternative working principles of treadmill and mechanical advantages of these alternatives. Then, the sequence of assembly was studied to decrease the time for assembly and repair.
In pursuit of a sustainable product we have worked hard for creating a treadmill that has a convenient structure for implementation of new possible technologies. Another challenge was to obtain the best mechanical advantage while keeping the whole volume minimized. With the use of the lever system with linear actuator, the two way motion has been obtained by taking up less space. As a result, the short movement of the linear actuator allows precise adjustment of the band's tilt and required rotational movement of platform.
