DESIGN NAME: Inspiration Runway, Furnitex and Design
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Exhibition Stand
INSPIRATION: Designing a space for the Inspiration Runway at the 2016 Australian Furniture Awards. We were commissioned to design a space using items which were sourced locally, or designed by local crafts people and artisans. Realising how proud we are of Australian made products, we used the peacock as inspiration for our stand. Brilliant teal blues and greens coupled with gold and brass highlights brought our exhibition scheme together.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: To design and create a space for the inspiration runway for the Furnitex and Design Exhibition and furniture awards for 2016 using only Australian made or designed pieces. This space is to form part of not only the exhibition, but also used as a back drop for the awards ceremony itself where the finalists were on display. We wanted to create a space where visitors to the show could envisage furniture used within their home, so we created a "mini" apartment, showcasing a dining space, living space and an outdoor terrace filled with stunning pieces.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The brief for the space was to create a design using only Australian made products. We decided to showcase these within a "home interior" environment, and allow visitors to the exhibition to walk through, feel and touch, and "live" in the environment. We had chairs, artificial grass, tropical plants and even a tree lit with stunning lights in our outdoor terrace where many visitors were able to enjoy "drinks on the terrace" as they would at home.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: We were invited to be part of the project in January 2016, and the exhibition took place in July 2016 at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre, Brisbane, Australia

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: In a space with no walls or flooring, we had to create temporary walls as we wanted not only create the atmosphere of an apartment within the great exhibition hall, but also to have suitable walls to display wall coverings within the huge hall. We also had to employ riggers to create a structure suitable for the pendant lights to hang from, and create atmosphere.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The stand size for the exhibit was 9000mm x 3000mm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: We carried out extensive research into locally made and designed products, and created a space suited to the Queensland environment, showing interior space and an exterior terrace.
We tried to create a space which could be enjoyed by many participants, and questioned previous exhibition goers to see what they would most enjoy.
CHALLENGE: With so many beautifully made local furniture and decor items, it was difficult to limit our choice to so few! Logisitics of transporting items was a difficult part of this challenge, ensuring that all the pieces arrived safely and on time from all corners of Australia.
