| DESIGN NAME: Changeable Chair PRIMARY FUNCTION: Chair INSPIRATION: This idea comes up accidentally. The design of Changeable Chair is based on system design theory, which could make the whole set work as a well operated system. Combining with the desire of indoor relaxation and the harmonious concept, this Changeable Chair just comes out as a result. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Changeable Chair is a chair set that included one chair and some small wooden boxes. These boxes are designed to have specialized wood joints, which could easily make the boxes assemble to the chair. Users can put daily home-using stuff in these boxes, such as handbook, pens, remote control, mug and even small potted plant! OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Chair for relaxing at home. Wood boxes are being used as attachments to the main chair. Users could put daily home-using stuff in the boxes as a very convenient storage place. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in December 2015 in Zhengzhou and finished in June 2016 in Zhengzhou, and was exhibited in Industrial Design Final Project Exhibition in Zhengzhou University of Light Industry. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: 30mm standard wood board is used as the only material to make the whole set. CNC lathe technique makes it possible to manufacture as it could cut wood easily and perfectly. CNC routing makes the wood process faster. Different wood joints are being used in all attachments for assembling. Cutting four pre-constructed wood board were explored initially which evolved into different shapes and patterns to make a complete unit. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width 580mm x Depth 600mm x Height 750mm TAGS: Furniture, Chair, multiple use, wood joints RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Wood joints has been widely used in the furniture design field from old dynasties in China by designers and carpenters in that age. Although some of their works are lost and ruined forever with the tide of time, many of their works are now exist and are well restored by museums and galleries in many countries in Asia. What could we do to develop this wood joints design theory as a urban industrial designer comes out to be an essential and vital issue we need to face to and work on it to make it complete. The design of Changeable Chair may explain this. CHALLENGE: Wooden furniture design is mostly difficult in the field of industrial design. Designers need to consider about both the material cost and the stability of the project. Save materials as much as we can and maintain the stability is the main goal that go through the whole process and evolution. To make the chair fit different weight of people, multiple experiments are needed. With the faith in our heart, finally we solved many difficulties and made our project a real thing!
