| DESIGN NAME: Embrace Your Heart PRIMARY FUNCTION: Chair INSPIRATION: Occasionally get the inspiration from the Buddhist philosophy called Zen, which could also be explained as meditation and contemplation. Furthermore, Zen is about making people feel peace and embracing their hearts, knowing and thinking about the deepest thoughts between desire and repose in their mind. People could mysteriously discover their path to the great beyond through Zen. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: With Embrace Your Heart, the chair, that you could set and drink tea at the same time. The fragrance of the tea and wood would lead people to Zen. The angles between different parts are precisely calculated in order to let people feel ease and leisure. The actual form of the chair is according to the traditional Chinese style and could well explained in Buddhism cultural aspect. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: On the right side of the chair, there is a small drawer where you could store your tea set. Open it, sit there and have a cup of tea. Meanwhile, you could also put your arm on the drawer with more relaxed. The peace in your mind would let you embrace you heart. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in December 2015 in Zhengzhou and finished in June 2016 in Zhengzhou, and was exhibited in Industrial Design Final Project Exhibition in Zhengzhou University of Light Industry. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Different standards of wood board are used as the material to make the whole set. CNC lathe technique makes it possible to manufacture as it could cut wood easily and perfectly. Different wood joints are being used to make all the parts assemble successfully. Cutting pre-constructed wood board were explored quite useful. With some specific wood joints, all these completed parts could assemble together as one. Glue is needed as a method to maintain the stability of all the wood joints. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width 680mm x Depth 500mm x Height 875mm TAGS: Furniture, Chair, multiple use, wood joints, storage RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Typical Chinese style furniture are now so different from the old days in ancient dynasties in China's history which lasts over 5,000 years. We have learnt some essential and vital advantages of today's new types of Chinese furniture as its focus more on cultural aspect and users' using experience. Inheriting the excellence of classical spirits and pay efforts on form and function would the main goal to achieve today. CHALLENGE: People in China today would likely to chose their furniture both in modern and classic. It is quite difficult to make these two concept balance. Designers have to find a better way to explain them well and bring their projects as less conflicts as they can. Edges and the actual form of the final one are simplified to make it modern. The main idea of Zen and the traditional style to make it classical.
