DESIGN NAME: Frigate Wallfisch and Lielais Square
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Multifunctional fountain outdoor design
INSPIRATION: The shape and sculptural design was inspired by Duke Jacob’s ship Wallfisch built in 1644 in Ventspils. It is a contemporary interpretation of this very important fact in the history of the city. Through innovative sculpturing and use of unprecedented water jet technology the fountain imitates the ship’s superstructure, its sails, the sea and ever-changing clouds of fog.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Outdoor design of the 3.6 ha Lielais Square and its focal point - the fountain Frigate Wallfisch reflects Ventspils identity in a contemporary and universal environmental design. It reproduces the image of dunes transforming into the developing Music School and concert hall, elements of which complement each other– the square, the fountain and the expressive construction. Square’s complex adds value to the urban environment attracting people at all seasons and increases recognition of Ventspils.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Design of the fountain is equally attractive and sculpturally satiated at every time and all seasons arround. In summer time - with water jets variability, fog mystic and LED lights effects at night. In winter darkness – thanks to LED all day around and effective sailing ship silhouette – underlines the city`s new centre and serves as icon of Ventspils.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: 1-st construction phase - Lielais Square reconstruction 2013 -2015
2-nd construction phase – Fountain “Frigate “Wallfish”” 2015-2016
3-rd construction phase – implementation of the Music School with Concert Hall 2017-2019
Location – city centre, intersection of the main routes

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The fountain is made of thick-walled stainless steel masts with openings lighted up by 17.000 LED bulbs. The flows of water are organised in 3 ways – as falling water, water spurts with a parabolic effect, and mist. All modes regulate and program automatically, according to weather. The mist turns off automatically when the wind speed is 15 m/s, the other modes – when 20 m/s. The most complex part of the implementation was mast setting in an exact angularity to create an architectonically vivid composition – close to that of a sailing ship in windy weather when masts are tilted in various angles. The masts are restrained by stylised concrete bases with supply of water and eletricity inside.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: -
CHALLENGE: Ventspils is the port city near the Baltic see with non-freezing port. Sailing and fishing always where the main occupation for inhabitants. Inspiration of the fountain shape and sculptural design was Duke Jacob’s ship Wallfisch built in 1644 in Ventspils. Duke Jakob was very well known with his shipyard, big fleet and world traveller`s experience. It is our history and we try to keep it for next generations presented in a modern way.
