DESIGN NAME: X-Space
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Window
INSPIRATION: By considering those circumstance always appearance in fire accident like passageway has been blocked so that the person inside the room cannot escape the scene of a fire immediately. To offer a better solution for trapped person get away form the fire quickly, we find the point in window frame redesign. We offer you X-Space, a redesign of window frame, the quickly way to get away from the fire and smoke.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: X-Space is redesign of the window frame including rotational structure holder. When it is opening, the automatic alarm will send a notice to fireman and the rotated holder combine with the outer wall will constitute a safety space isolated the fire and smoke. When fire coming up, all family members can easily get out of the fire through the X-Space avoiding the injury from the fire and smoke behind the outer wall. On ordinary days, X-Space is just look like an unique window frame outside.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: In usual days, when you want to open your window, turn the handle into 90 degrees anti-clockwise. When fire coming up, turn the handle into 180 degrees anti-clockwise to trigger the fire alarm. As this time, if you open the window, all holder interacting by mechanical principal with each other are relevant with it. After all family members come into the X-Space waiting for rescued, you should pull out the fire resisting shutter which is hidden in the holder axis to cover the window position therefore it will constitute a safety space isolated the fire and smoke.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in August 2016 in LAFA Communal Facility Design Studio and finished in February 2017 in National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center of Industrial Design in LAFA.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Our project is kind of model combination design, combine with 5 holder parts. All holder interacting by mechanical principal with each other.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: In some kinds of situations of the fire that passageway has been blocked in accident. No matter what you do, you cannot escape from the fire through the door. Once fire coming up, the dark smoke billows on it’s heels. According to the data, as long as you get away from the fire in 3 minutes, the chance you will alive are occupied the certain proportion. Thus, we try to find a appropriate way in product design which can make people get away from the fire immediately. Finally, we find our point in window frame redesign.
CHALLENGE: The challenge of our design is that we cannot find a suitable material in smoke control and thermal isolated. After a number of tests in the selection of materials, we finally find the proper material which achieves the desired effect.
