DESIGN NAME: Pavara
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Sink tidy
INSPIRATION: When designing my own kitchen, I wanted everything to have its place. I had thought about where each and everything would go. All of my cookware and kitchenware were beautifully stored away, but still within easy access. However, I couldn't find a storage solution for the things we used most often, such as washing up utensils. This lead me to create a gloss solution that compliments a modern and minimalist kitchen.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Unlike conventional sink tidies that only act as holding containers, the Pavara sink tidy hides its contents. Then when it is needed, the sink tidy can be rotated, so all the contents are easily accessible. The exterior has been finished in gloss to compliment a modern kitchen.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The unit has a rotating function, so that the contents can be easily accessed. Then after use, it can be rotated back round, so the high gloss exterior is visible. The base is perforated to allow excess water to drain away.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The original idea was thought up by myself in November 2012. I began work on the concept in the Spring of 2013. After experimenting with different prototypes, this final version was signed off in the Summer of 2016.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The interior is made from ABS plastic. The manufacturing method is similar to that of a general sink tidy. The exterior has been finished in high gloss.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The sink tidy base has a diameter of 140mm. The height is 308mm.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Whilst designing my own kitchen, I wanted to create a minimalist look. In order to achieve this everything had to have its place. But the one area, that there didn't seem to be a solution for, was the sink area. I set about conducting a survey to establish what was currently being used and whether users were satisfied with the current options for sink tidies. Following on from this, a more detailed survey was carried out and it quickly became evident that there was a gap in the market for a gloss sink tidy.
CHALLENGE: When creating a new product there are always challenges. The main 2 challenges were choosing the correct material for manufacturing and creating the rotating mechanism. The material had to be robust but able to be finished in gloss. The rotating mechanism needed to be adaptable for use in a wet environment.
