DESIGN NAME: Gu 25
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Art atelier and architecture studio
INSPIRATION: A second studio location and art atelier in Vienna had been a dream of the artist and architect ISA STEIN since a longer time. Vienna as central turntable of art in Austria and some projects in architecture, finally inspired her to look for a possible design space in this city. The property in the Gumpendorfer street with its neighborhood to the „naschmarkt“ and lots of other central points of the city, looked like the perfect place for her plan.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The goal was to fit a new design into the rooms, but at the same time be careful with the old substance to generate a new symbiosis.
The parquet floor was preserved and completely renovated. Walls and ceilings are kept completely white to let the art appear unaffected of the surrounding. A modern kitchen in the middle room becomes not only an art venue, but also art storage and exhibition area. A freestanding stone tube can be also used as a cooling tray for drinks during an event. The tile floor was uncovered again, creating a unique atmosphere. Using a ladder you can reach the open sleeping loft for guests on the layer above. Suitable for the flexible use of the rooms, light rails were integrated below the ceiling, which can provide general lighting, produce a partial indirect light to create a pleasant atmosphere for evening events, or
highlight individual pictures.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The space in an old building revealed a great potential for flexible working conditions: a room for the artistic and architectural work processes, as well as meetings of different artists or with clients. The street facing room is entered through a newly designed and transparent windscreen. The interaction with passers-by and their insights into the working process are desired. Also meetings of different artists should be possible, or just give space to discuss architectural work with clients. And of course a private space as retreat which offers the necessary calmness.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Completed in January 2015 in Vienna

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The idea was to to fit a new design into the rooms, but at the same time be careful with the old substance to generate a new symbiosis, and flexible working conditions should have been created (for arts as well as for architecture and for meeting with artists and clients). Some unique pieces of interior fittings were desired, that is why the old chairs and the cabinet found their place. The bath tube and the sink made of stone are remarkable pieces in the interior; they were found in an antique shop Hesz in Austria. The artist wanted to have anything in her place made of stone, because her surname Stein means Stone in Englisch.
