| DESIGN NAME: The Man in the Clouds PRIMARY FUNCTION: 3D illustration INSPIRATION: The song is about a man that lives in his small house with a beautiful painting on the wall. People sit next to him looking at his beautiful painting of how the world was created. Then the man in the clouds got a visit by someone who expressed the value of the painting in money and warned the guy in the clouds for thieves. Then on one day, the man decided to burn the painting because he could no longer cope with the anxiety. After the painting was burned he walked outside where he finally saw his painting reflected in the landscape around him. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This is a picture of an idea I get after hearing the song: The Man in the Clouds. The lyrics by Harry Jekkers of Klein Orkest inspired me so much that I decided to make a 3D image of it. The image reflects my love for the lyrics and the passion for illustration. And it reflects something of myself either. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: - PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The idea formed in early 2014 and I started in 2015 with some sketches. In 2016 I worked out the modelling of the house and the landscape. I finished the illustration in 2016. FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Computer Graphics, 3D Modeling, Texturing, and Rendering Design |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Started with some rough sketches and worked out in a 3D environment (Cinema 4D). Applying textures made up of photographs. Rendering in Cinema 4D and with the Vue xStream plugin. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 529 x 309 mm at 300 dpi. Adobe RGB profile. TAGS: illustration, 3D illustration, storytelling, little house, fairy tail RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research behind this illustration started first by looking through references (particularly) 3D models of Toon houses. I knew that the house should have a kind of Toon character to it. The visual style had to be a huge landscape with a high rock in front with a tiny house on it. It shows the loneliness of the man in the clouds. The surrounding has to be gorgeous as his painting. So searching for nice photographs of beautiful landscapes and build those in 3D. The modelling was done with Cinema 4D. CHALLENGE: The biggest challenge for me was to create the right atmosphere where the man in the cloud lives. It had to fit the lyrics of the song. So with a picture and style in my head and with the help of some photographs, I built up the environment carefully. The right lights or atmosphere was the most challenging part.
