DESIGN NAME: irilla
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Task Lamp
INSPIRATION: As the name suggests, the functionality of the on/off status of the lamp is inspired from the human iris, rather than a conventional on/off switch. The overall form of the body blends the taste of near future with a minimalistic design flow and suggests a modern look.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: irilla is a task lamp that helps you work more efficiently, productively and comfortably. The lamp functionality is however inspired form the iris and the whole design follows a minimalistic flow with utmost flexibility to direct light exactly where you need it. The lamp is void of a conventional on / off switch, instead the illuminance happens on the go by the aperture mechanism that sits right on the lamp head. No more turning on and off, just do the twist and that will suffice.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The main objective of any task lamp would be to direct light to where ever it is required. Unlike the conventional lamp, irilla is a task lamp that not only has the utmost flexibility in directing light to the user but also comes with a hint of near future interaction of the user with the lamp itself. The lamp holds a twist to illuminate mechanism incorporated with the help of micro controllers and sensors, rather than the old fashioned way of using a conventional on/off switch for illuminating the lamp. The intensity of illumination is however taken care of by the iris or aperture mechanism. An open aperture gives a maximum illumination to the user, while the illumination intensity becomes more finer and more focused when the aperture size is medium and when the aperture is fully closed, the lamp shuts down.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in August 2016 in IIT Kanpur,India and finished in October 2016 in IIT Kanpur,India.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The sleek, modern, rough metal feel of irilla is achieved by the state of the art anodized aluminium metal forming technique with a clear anodized matte finish and the arm relies on precise metal tubing. The aperture is made of steel sheet coated in black that gives a raw iris feel. The optical technology comprises of a micro controller core with seven surface mount device leds and infrared proximity sensor embedded on the printed circuit board. The position of the aperture is sensed by the infrared proximity sensors and illuminates the leds accordingly. The heat sink mounted on the leds helps in reducing the junction temperature and thus enhancing the life span of the leds.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Lamp shade diameter 90mm
Lamp base diameter 150mm
Metal tube arms 12mm thickness, 450mm and 600mm respectively.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: My aim was to design a minimal, modern task lamp. To do this my research focused on the simplicity in shapes, their relationships with each other and the underlying optic technology to come up with an interactive twist to illuminate switching mechanism that gives a hint of the future rather than making use of conventional switching.
CHALLENGE: The production of simple and minimal products may not be as simple as we expect them to be. The main challenge with the task lamp was to incorporate the aperture mechanism and control the illuminance with respect to the position of the aperture and its size. The second challenge was in the development of the aluminum twist top, which holds the micro controller core, leds, sensors, heat sinks and wires. Thirdly, figuring out it's scope, dimension, finish, and colours for the end user without compromising on minimalism and a near future look.
