| DESIGN NAME: Bain Shelf PRIMARY FUNCTION: Wall Shelf INSPIRATION: Originally designed as part of a custom kitchen for a private residence, the wireframe shelves were used to improve the visual sightlines of the space. “I wanted to create strong horizontal lines in a galley kitchen where the upper cabinets were interrupted by various windows and clearance requirements.” Says the designer. The thin frame structure of the shelves reduce the visual mass and bring a sense of elegance to the space. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Bain wireframe shelf is designed for various residential or commercial applications. The 12x12mm frame profile could be finished in a wide range of colours and the wood shelves fabricated from laminate oak are oil finished for a natural texture and colour. The design is improved with non-directional lighting to illuminate the shelves and surround area. They can be mounted under upper storage cabinets or independently on the wall. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The Bain shelf is easily mounted to the wall and conceals the fasteners for a pleasing aesthetic finish. The form and function distill the requirement from a shelf to the simplest elements, a good contact surface allows for a strong connection to the wall structure, the integrated lighting illuminates both upwards and downwards making it suitable for counter top illumination in a kitchen environment. and the sturdy solid oak shelves offer a strong stable surface to hold goods. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The design of the project evolved from a site specific installation in a private residence in Toronto to a stand alone product developed in our studio. From the initial prototype version to the final product, the development spanned over a number months. The focus was more on resolving the design challenges then compressing a schedule. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Painted steel frame with oiled laminated solid oak shelves and Integrated LED lighting. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 12” tall , 12”deep, 24 ¾” wide. Dimensions varie TAGS: open shelf, retail display, display shelf, wall storage, display, shelf, wall mounted, shelves RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The design objective was to create an easily assembled and installed shelf system that was adaptable to different design applications. The lighting is fully integrated and becomes part of the system. The design had to be easily adapted to different environments. CHALLENGE: The biggest challenge was to integrate the lighting, assembly and structural qualities in a light weight appearance. It was our goal to conceal the fasteners yet have a strong assembly capable of supported a good amount of weight. the lighting is fully concealed and the light source is not readily visible at a glance. This adds to the design quality refinement. Bouncing the light off the back wall surface enhance the visual appearance of lightness. making the shelf appear as floating on the wall.
