DESIGN NAME: University of Melbourne - Arts West
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Upholstered Acoustic Panels
INSPIRATION: We were succesful in winning this project at tender stage.
From there we had several discussions with the Builder, Architect and the Client (University of Melbourne). Through these discussions and prototype samples we were able to reach a satisfactory outcome and product that was asthetically pleasing and functional.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Our brief was to supply and install a multitude of Fabric wrapped Acoustic panels with various sizes, angles and shapes. Initial prototypes saw changes in both the design and the physical means of installing and suspending these panels from the walls, ceilings and the underside of the staircases. It was at this point we realised that the current proprietary hanging systems for ceiling panels were not adequate for our needs and we designed our own.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The installation of these panels in a six storey Atrium has reduced the noise level of a busy University considerably.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project began in December 2015 with initial prototypes. Once these prototypes were approved work commenced on site in January 2016 until June 2016.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: As standard hanging systems were not available we designed our own system using threaded steel, eye bolts, turnbuckles and heavy springs for the ceiling panels. This allowed us to control the finished ceiling height using the turnbuckles on the threaded steel, whilst the heavy duty springs would pull the panels together for a seamless canopy. The wall panels were hung via traditional split battens (French cleats).
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The Acoustic panels were in a variety of sizes ranging from the smallest at 1800mm x 1200 mm to the largest at 3000 x 1200 mm. All panels had a finished depth of 50mm.
