DESIGN NAME: Decaffeinator
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Planter
INSPIRATION: Every day, Americans throw away 900 million tablespoons of coffee grounds, which are a brilliant natural fertilizer. Instead of letting these coffee rounds sit it landfills where they may take years to reach the earth and decompose, we created a product that reduces waste and helps sustain new plant life, while also saving water at the same time.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Decaffeinator is a simple solution to household urban waste by storing coffee waste and reusing it to sustain the growth of a new plant. This product has three layers, each specifically designed for its unique function. One layer holds water, a second holds coffee grounds, and a third holds the plant. It made of Coffee Based filament, further recycling coffee waste. Decaffeinator is a cradle-to-cradle solution to reduce environmental impact and support plant growth from the comfort of the home.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Plant sits in innermost, perforated layer. Coffee grounds are poured into middle layer, which then infiltrate soil through perforations in inner module. Water is poured through spout into outermost module, where it sits until needed by plant. Strings extend from outer layer to inner layer, wicking water to plant as needed.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in January 2017 in Toronto and finished in February 2017 in Toronto, and was exhibited on The Social during fabrication.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The 3D model was designed on Rhinoceros and printed partially on a Formbot T-Rex+ 3D Printer and partially on a Craftbot PLUS 3D Printer. The entire form is printed with coffee-based 3D printer filament.
