DESIGN NAME: AVEC JOIE Fragrance Packaging
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Fragrance
INSPIRATION: It all started with the scent. The fresh oriental floral fragrance first made me thought of my mother, hence I wanted to dedicate this project to women who are confident and sophisticated, strong yet romantic; women who have bright souls, enjoy small getaways on sunny holidays, and always bringing joy to the people around them. These characteristics and the scent itself led me to the concept of flower petals, sunlight, and hot air balloons, which are the main inspiration for the design.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: AVEC JOIE (meaning “with joy”), is a fragrance with a fresh oriental floral scent, dedicated to women who are confident and sophisticated, strong yet romantic. The design of the bottle is inspired by the warmth of sunlight, the elegance of petals, and the joyfulness of hot air balloons. As you slowly tilt the bottle, it shifts from a balloon to light flower petals. Each perspective creates its own unique shape.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: You can see a peek of gold shinning through the package, as you open it, the fragrance welcomes you on a golden platform. The shape of the bottle was initially inspired by hot air balloons; as you slowly tilt it, it then shifts into light flower petals. Each perspective creates its own unique shape.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in Jan 2016 and finished in May 2016 in New York. It was featured on "Packaging of the World" in Feb 2017 and has received the Marc Rosen Merit Awards in March 2017.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: After sketching out the design of the bottle, I made a 3D render to finalize the dimensions. We were each given a piece of clay to create the model, then sent to production along with instructions on material and color choices.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The project started with a detailed research on the target audience. Then an exploration on shapes and forms of different elements, including architecture, lighting designs, plants, shadow movements...etc.
CHALLENGE: The main challenge of this project was to transform smell into a visual experience; how scent represented age, life style, characteristics, color pallet, texture, material, or even food choices. This was an interesting and new design process for me.
