DESIGN NAME: Aerelight A1
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Desk Lamp
INSPIRATION: The design of the Aerelight A1 lamp was inspired by the distinct form factor and illumination quality of Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) lighting. For the first time in history, we have a light source that is neither a bulb nor a point source, but a thin sheet of uniform, warm, natural light. Derived from organic materials, OLED delivers the illumination of a traditional 60W bulb while consuming 80 percent less energy. Aerelight A1 was developed from the motivation to create the world’s first consumer ready OLED lamp where users could experience this naturally soft and diffuse light.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Designed for simplicity and user interaction, the Aerelight A1 desk lamp brings cutting edge, energy-efficient OLED light technology out of research labs and into your hands. The incredibly thin and elegant profile of the lamp is only possible with OLED, which casts an ultra-wide footprint of warm glare-free light. The innovative use of flat flexible power cables blends seamlessly with the minimal and thin form factor. Touch activation for brightness control eliminates accessory switches, while the base conceals a convenient wireless charger for compatible mobile devices.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The Aerelight A1 is designed for simplicity and intuitive user interface. Three brightness levels are controlled easily through touch activation, which is sensitive anywhere on the metal frame. This intimate user interaction was inspired by OLED which is characterized by low heat emission, uniquely making it a light source that is not dangerous to touch. This simple user interface makes the lamp safe and easy for anyone to use.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The product was conceptualized in May 2014 and launched for pre-orders four months later. After focused design development and engineering in Toronto, Canada, the Aerelight A1 OLED lamp entered mass production in June 2015. We were able to deliver a quality product from concept to production in one year. This was our company’s very first product on the market.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The Aerelight A1 is the first consumer lamp utilizing energy-efficient OLED lighting technology. The carbon-based materials used in OLED manufacturing are sustainable and contain no toxic metals such as mercury and lead. Additionally, the light produced is free of UV and IR emission. The Aerelight A1 is handcrafted in Canada using premium materials, the precise angles in the anodized Aluminum frame deliver maximum illumination while providing visual balance. The lamp is accented with walnut wood, offering a warm contrast to the durable metal frame.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Product dimensions: Height: 29cm Depth: 13cm Width: 13cm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Detailed research was done on the OLED lighting industry and existing products on the market. At the time, no OLED lighting products were available to the general consumer to readily purchase. High-end lamps utilizing OLED lighting did exist but were categorized as designer art pieces that would retail for thousands of dollars and were not geared towards the mass market. The current energy-efficient lighting market is saturated with LED lighting products and we sought to differentiate ourselves in this category.
CHALLENGE: Creating a product with a new innovative technology presented many challenges for the project. There were many unknowns for OLED in terms of product reliability, market reception and material supply. Hence the internal design team was responsible to custom engineer all aspects of the design from the control circuits to mounting schemes to the interconnect design to the durability testing. There were no consumer OLED products to benchmark and hence our design solutions were all derived through our own innovative solutions and methods all within the timeline of one year.
