Paq Chair Bed
The design had to utilise just one mattress and the covering textile to form a bed. Inspiration for the final solution came from paper folding and resource limitations.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Paq transforms from armchair to bed with just one zipper move. It is the world’s simplest chair bed. The double folded back and the wide seat hugs and holds you comfortably. It also has a built in storage unit to store beddings.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Operation is as simple as possible: one zipper move to open your armchair to a bed. You can store your beddings in the container. To zip it back to a chair, you have to re-connect the end of the zippers and pull to shape a cylinder. You can now put the container inside: this will keep the seating area round and solid. Push the corner and pull the zipper until it stops to get the chair form again.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
This project started in 2010 and was refined ever since. The mass produced version hit the market in late 2016.

The research team tried many different directions to solve the problem of creating a seating out of a plain body. In the end, paper folding and origami techniques seemed to be most efficient. By using paper folding, the team was able to carry out experiments quickly and with low costs. The final solution was even simpler than expected: one connection and one fold is enough to form a chair from a mattress.
The challenge was to overcome the problems of a small, multi-purpose space with a solution that is as simple as possible. Using only a mattress to form a chair was defined as a challenge by the team. The next step was to scale the paper folds back to real life: finding the right solutions for a furniture-scale product was a great challenge. Bearing all the weights and forces that appear when a user sits inside: it was a great challenge to keep the product simple and lightweight.
