DESIGN NAME: Artisans House
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Architect's Office & Design Studio
INSPIRATION: Before developing a design, a designer goes back to the roots or to its basic form to get some inspiration, which is evolved further into a beautiful piece of art. Similarly, being close to nature, inspires us to form a rustic outlook. Rustic theme emphasizes on nature, time-worn, handcrafted, distressed elements, constructed in earthen materials or finished in a natural hue. This allows us to design modern spaces, being in shadow of nature.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The spaces are designed for their own office, where design consultancy is provided for creating unique architectural & interior design projects. This project is a showcase of their unprecedented thinking, which also displays the importance given to a designer's innovative & meticulous working. The project has created a new timeless design language, which is a fusion of contemporary and rustic style. The interiors also sets a example of a work environment which is interestingly designed, to get best out of creative minds. The spaces built a sense of both formal and informal character which develops a unique work culture for the designers. The layout is planned keeping the climatic situation in mind to achieve energy conservation and to reduce carbon footprint.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Office truly follows an "Open door policy" which allows it to create maximum transparent and interactive spaces. The spaces reveal themselves in sequence, much like a good film holding the viewer's interest. As the work space is entirely related to construction industry, the interiors also interacts in the same language. The furniture designed is extremely functional, user friendly and with appropriate anthropometry.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in 2015 and completed in 2016, and is located in Pune, India.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The office efficiently creates a timeless design language with skillful fusion of Rustic & Contemporary styles. Materials viz. leftover construction steel, bricks, timber, concrete, insitu flooring and bamboo, complements the design language. Habitable micro climate is achieved through earthen material. For example, materials like bamboo fenestration towards the south reduces the internal temperature by 8-10 degree obstructing the south glare, saving energy and reducing the carbon footprint.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: A plot to be developed with a four storied structure, from which first & second floor spaces were to be designed with interiors for our own office (Architect's office). Hence, this allowed us to design exterior and interior spaces that would compliment each other. The project brief comprised of a Reception and waiting area (25 sq.m), Confernce room (35 sq.m), Studios (80sq.m), 2 no. of Discussion areas (12 sq.m each), Principal cabin(35 sq.m), 3 no. of Directors cabin (3 sq.m each), 2 no. pantry (6sq.m each), 3 no. Toilets (4 sq.m each).
Project Area (carpet area) : 320 sq.m
Project cost: 223531 Euro/Project
Cost/sq.ft: 698 Euro/sq.m
Project completion: Oct. 2016

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research type specifically revolved around planning of interior spaces. The major objectives for research were how to create a sustainable micro climate, optimum use of available infrastructure, and developing a timeless design style. The strategies where evolved by zoning the areas as per climatic response and its functionality, by developing a design style that would give justice to site context. To confront these strategies we selected suitable materials to achieve habitable micro climate viz. the south facade is fenestrated with bamboo reducing the heat intake by 8-10 degrees, designed user friendly and flexible spaces without hampering the internal infrastructure. We created a timeless design language which is fusion of rustic and contemporary styles which compliments the site surrounding. Materials viz. leftover construction steel, bricks, timber, concrete, insitu flooring and bamboo accolades the rustic outlook. Materials were allowed to retain their natural texture with their innovative applications for example use of construction steel for table support. Such innovative experiments composed the entire space in desired manner.
CHALLENGE: Designing in itself is a creative challenge of transforming your aspiration into reality. Being a workplace, the spaces needed to be designed considering the multi-functionality and flexibility aspect in a innovative manner. Decoding a material pallet, with consideration of craftsman availability for an aspired output. Adopting new techniques/finishes in combination with vernacular material to make them sustainable. Selection of various entities for efficient use of energy resources through a designers perspective.
