DESIGN NAME: Ocd
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Brooch
INSPIRATION: It is inspired by Neil Hilborn's poem "OCD". The sorrow and sadness of this poem came through and evoked a sense of emotion resonance in my heart. In the poem, he shared how falling in love affected his disorder, from the day she came to his life, to the day she left.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: I started my research on OCD first, and found out that a lot of patients tend to spend time making sure things are aligned and arranged perfectly, so I decided to choose the shape square to represent that. The silver petals on the right side are composed to look like a angelic figure that embodies the girl from Neil's poem. I arranged the squares tilted and dangled in order to capture the emotion of how people felt when someone important has left them, broken and hopeless. The reason why I want it to be a brooch is that I want it to rest on your chest, stay close to where your heart is.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: It interacts with people who have a sensitive heart and resonate with the broken and the wounded. It could be worn as a brooch, and it'll also look great as a three dimensional wall piece.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was started and finished in February 2016 in California College of the Arts, Oakland.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: I used mostly sterling silver for this piece. I rolled copper sheets to make them extremely thin, and cut them into tiny pieces, then fuse them on to the silver sheets without using any solder, in order to create a unique texture and visual effect. I spend a lot of time playing with the composition and tried to find the perfect balance between geometric and organic shapes. The three dimensional quality of this piece also gave viewers more to look at. Also,, there're cuts and marks I intentionally left on the silver squares, indicating the hurtful and wounded feeling from the poem.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Dimension: Width 4 inch * Depth 2.5 inch * Height 5 inch
Materials: Sterling silver, Copper

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: I spent a lot of time understanding the behavior and the emotions of people who have OCD. I also thought about how to create a statement brooch but still keep it wearable.
CHALLENGE: Fusing copper onto silver sheets is a big challenge, you have to control the heat very carefully, make sure the copper sticks to silver without melting it. Inserting all the petals together and soldering them is another challenge that requires a lot of patience.
