DESIGN NAME: Magic Jelly
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Swallowing Aid
INSPIRATION: While working as a clinical pharmacist at a general hospital, I often saw patients having meals mixed with medicines. Medicines are designed to take with water not to interfere medication's effectiveness or absorption, and to dissolve completely in a stomach. Yet, many patients have problems taking medication with water, due to the possible gagging or choking on the throat, or its bad taste. So, I started this project. I believe giving the medication safely and more relaxing way can optimize the Quality of Life.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The world's first Swallowing Aid Jelly covers up the medicine and deliver it to stomach safely and smoothly while masking the taste and smell. One can swallow multiple pills at once, without getting them stuck or chocking in the throat . Agar and other natural ingredients do not alter the medicine’s efficacy, and it dissolves medicines completely in the stomach. As the demand for solid pharmaceutical formulation is increasing, Jelly assists for the better mouthfeel and give precise dosage.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: With the cover up type jelly, prepare approx. 15g of jelly in the container. Cover up the medication between Jelly just like a sandwich. Then swallow. With the mix type jelly, mix powdered or granule medicine and jelly with spoon before swallowing. Masking type jelly is to mask the bitter medicine such as antibiotics. Just mix the jelly and medicine. And swallow. All of the package is designed to have the right particle sizes of jelly. So it won’t stick on the throat.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The development of this project started in 1996 in Japan. The first product launched in the market in 1997. Initially, we targeted a medical and nursing care field, as those are most needed. Then, we expanded the market to introduce the products to children and ordinary people.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The radiography and fluoroscopy, Study and compare the data between taking madicine with water and taking madicine with Jelly.
In this reserach, we used 20 adult participants to swallow capsuls with both water and jelly to observe the swallowing process through a radiography and fluoroscopy. As a refult, 85% of perticipants had choked capsuls on their throat with water. Yet, 100% of them swallowed capsuls without any problem with Jelly.
CHALLENGE: At the time of the development, Agar was regarded as a contraindicated material for dysphasic patients among Doctors and pharmacists. Therefore, getting their consensus was very difficult task. Also, since it was totally one of a kind category, Ministry of Health and Welfare warned for the possible violation of the Pharmaceutical Affairs Law. We persistently made our effort to clear out obstacles, by proving the safeties from the laboratory result, and explaining the needs of the society.
