| DESIGN NAME: Leira Lounge Chair PRIMARY FUNCTION: Lounge Chair INSPIRATION: Leira was inspired by the Chinese Zen chair, which has a large sitting surface that allows people to put the whole body into the chair. The sitting surface is even big enough for meditation. Chinese Zen chair creates a harmonious and peaceful artistic conception, and deeply inspired me to design and manufacture the Leira lounge chair. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This design project targets the Millennial, the soon-to-be leading generation of consumers. They are full of vitality, creativity, and imagination. For those that live in a fast-paced urban city, they often are swamped by their social and work lives. This chair is dedicated for those who want to treat themselves with high-quality personal time at home. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Leira is a dedicated lounge chair only for you. The spacious interior space allows people to change the position however they want. Offering a wider interior for ample seating space, the unique ergonomic backrest form provides the most comfortable support. The wooden frame is wrapped in the soft leather. Daring, organic lines, and delicate stitching design make Leira more unique and exquisite. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in Sept 2016 in Pasadena and finished in Dec 2016. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Material: Suede & Leather (upholstery), Lamb fur (pillow), Plywood (CNC shell), Aluminum (base) SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Dimensions: Overall – 38.61’’W x 38.4’’D x 44.5’’ H TAGS: chair, loungechair, furniture, multifunctional, manual, upholstered, seating, leather, user-experience, hand-made, design RESEARCH ABSTRACT: I conducted several different ways of research for this project. First of all, I performed an in-depth research on my targeted market to understand their way of living and try to bring that into my design. I not only interviewed more than 100 individuals but also conducted different surveys online for more insights. After I had decided my design concept for this project, I went through different kinds of literature and documentaries for inspirations. I came across the concept of Chinese Zen Chair, which contributed heavily to the foundation of my design. I also spent countless hours researching ergonomics to come up with the best backrest shape possible by reading and interviewing professionals. CHALLENGE: The main creative challenge for this project was to find a way to present my design language and find the balance between my design and actual manufacturing process. NAME: Art Center College of Design - Topic Studio Furniture PROFILE: There has been a log been written and explored about Nex-Gen and the Work environment. We have investigated the changing landscape of WORK and how it integrates into our lives. We have looked at out next generation's ideas about how to engage in the workplace, but very little has been said about what will the home environment look like for this new young generation? We have redefined the office with collaborative areas, standing desks, and working lounges, so we know about the office, but not the home. The new Nex-Gen will be a defining breed. The college student of today will soon become the consumer of tomorrow. When we think about the design of furniture, we rarely consider the needs and desires of the upcoming in which we live are changing in general. Our Nex-Gen will expect something different from their home which is more in-line with their style, communications, and aspirations. Social media, digital devices and an ever-evolving outlook on the world are changing the expectations of the built environment. This studio is about empowering Nex-Gen to design their own home future, free from the constraints of the past or the functional requirements of the present. |
