DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Taiko-En

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Japanese Shrine

INSPIRATION:
In Japan’s ancient times, red is a sacred color with a mystical powers. It is also part the word “Sekishin” that can be translated into “open-heartedness. Simplified “Torii” structures, the gate to a Shinto shrine, are arranged continuously. Torii symbolizes the entrance to the fantasy world from the daily life, and it is said that wishes may come true when one "passes" the gates.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
A Japanese shrine. The traditional Japanese wedding is said to be performed in front of the ancestors, and has been practiced since the middle of the Meiji era. While preserving the history of Taiko-En, a Japanese temple with about 100 years of history, we also aimed to create a space where one can embark on a new history through a traditional wedding ceremony.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
finished in September 2015 in Osaka-shi, Osaka, Japan

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Interior Space and Exhibition Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Red torii structures are arranged in a row, and the room is surrounded by the tori structures. We put a lot of emphasis on the red color. It is an elegant and deep Japanese red, not to light neither too dark. Also, in Japan, it is said that the Gods dwell in nature. Our design creates a grand and mysterious space by placing a temple in nature and builds a connection with the garden that can be seen from the front window. We designed a unique and modern Japanese wedding hall that preserves the traditional Japanese wedding style.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:

CHALLENGE:
The challenge was to build a space composed almost entirely of torii. However, while it was worthwhile to preserve history, there is a possibility that the value will disappear when combining history with a modern design. We challenged the design of a space that preserves history and provides a modern feeling.
