DESIGN NAME: 4six for SMV
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Bench
INSPIRATION: The world is full of products, but we focus on product innovation with added value and wherever possible on local production and environmentally friendly materials. good design is build on a constant discourse. Communication is an essential base for a creative process and clever solutions.Production methods in a responsible manner has been a key issue. Solutions that respond to economic needs while remaining environmentally conscious has been our philosophy in creating this product.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Elegant and timeless the bench acts in diverse contexts, it enriches the living culture in private and in public spaces. production methods in a responsible manner has been a key issue.
Solutions that respond to economic needs while remaining environmentally conscious has been our philosophy in creating this product. Thus its modular origins, the bench can be configurated to its needs, from a small rest bench in the living room up to long benches for public spaces.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The legs have two mounting options, thus the seat plates can be mounted in two di erent positions, to let the benches grow in length. The possibility depending on the use, the sheet can be mounted upside down to achieve a lumbar support.
The coloration of the rst series of the furniture is chosen deliberately simple with black and white parts to emphasize the clean lines of the design.
Elegant and timeless acts the bench in diverse contexts, it enriches the living culture in private and in public spaces.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: In the autumn of 2015, we were invited to arrange the seating for the traveling exhibition and reading "1 Million Years" by the Japanese conceptual artist On Kawara at the Goethe University in Frankfurt. Within the scope of this project, the basic features of the 4six seating furniture were developed.
We quickly realized, however, that we can not realize our ideas with the budget set by the organizer. After a long weighing-up, we decided to finance the project ourselves and could thus meet our own approach in Quality and execution. The first benches were then produced and placed by us.
The positive feedback helped us to further develop the product. Within the scope of a university project, we refined the bench so that we had produced three prototype series with local companies until we were satisfied with product development and production.
Afterwards, we exhibited our bench at the IMM - International Furniture Fair in Cologne in spring 2016 under "pure talents", and looked for partners for production and sales. We have developed a collaboration with our producer and sales partner SMV Sitz- & Objektmöbel GmbH from Löhne from the contacts we were able to make at the trade fair.
A family-run company that produces locally and sustainably in Germany. In October 2016, the market launch took place under the manufacturer, at the Orgatec trade fair in Cologne. After winning various Awards, new projects with the manufacturer are planned for 2017.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Milled Multiplex legs have a colored melamine coat on the outer sides, the front end shows the lateral construction of the material, which kept in its natural state to show its exciting character of laminated wood.
This unobtrusive moment of tension between the natural materials and painted surfaces is created.
With a smart positioning of the leg elements on the raw Wood, the o cuts can be kept as marginal as possible.
The seat panels are made of bent aluminum, which have been nished with a at, slightly textured powder coating.
The paint used in the process of powder coating is water based and contains no resolvent, as up to 95% of the spayed paint can be recuperated.
The panels are laser cutted to ensure precise ma- nufacturing. Aluminum o ers the highest stability and low weight ratio, and can be produced from recycled raw materials, and recycled after its li- fecycle.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Thus its modular origin and minimal parts, the bench can be configured as a single stool up to an infinite bench. The plates are available in 40cm, 60cm and 80cm lengths. Within these modules, all usual length can be achieved.
We adopted our approach of minimal design as- well to the packging.
When storing and transporting a small number of elements, a simple packaging is used, which ts in with the common packing size of the shipping companies.
