| DESIGN NAME: Water Prism PRIMARY FUNCTION: Water Glass INSPIRATION: Sunlight can be broken into different colors through a prism. The colors are usually called "spectrum" or "rainbow". Water Prism is inspired by this beautiful physical phenomenon. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: With a 45 degree slopping bottom, the regular glass divides into two triangular sections. When the glass cup is filled with water, the top section becomes a water prism allowing sunlight passing through to project a “rainbow” on table. This design intends to encourage people to find, observe and create the beauty of nature in life. Further more, it can touches your heart with an unexpected beauty in such a fast-paced society in China. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The significant moment of this design is when the sunshine running through the cup filled with water, which forms a triangular prism inside, it creates a pleasant rainbow effect in the front, and thus brings the user and nature together to create a unique emotional experience. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project started in January 2016 in Beijing, Tsinghua University. Our first theory prototype was made in February to verify the viability of the rainbow. And the production prototype is made in October. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: For the production procedure, it is quiet simple. We can heat the glass cup high to 1500℃. Next, model the bottom of the glass. And then, fused the two slopping bottomed glass cups together. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Size: (length, width, height): 68mm x 68mm x 76mm TAGS: glass, rainbow, emotional design, surprise, prism, water prism RESEARCH ABSTRACT: 1. Design method: Significant moment. We use this method with some service design toolkits to make an inside of users’ need. After that we choose one or more touch point in the users’ journey map and design a significant moment to give them a good memory when using our product. For example, if your water glass can show you a rainbow on your desk one day more than expected, you must fall in love with it. 2. Design principle: Keep it nature. What we did, in this design, is just show the beauty of nature rather than the beauty of the design itself. We keep the structure of the glass as simple as possible, because we don’t want to disturb user enjoy the rainbow and the beauty of life we show them. CHALLENGE: 1. Verify the viability of the rainbow: We use laser cut, make the first prototype. And change different degrees of the sloping bottom to choose the best one to show rainbow. 2. The manufacture of the glass: After many attempts, we find a very simple way to make it. Stick two fused sloping bottom glass together. NAME: Tsinghua University, Academy of Arts and Design PROFILE: With the approval of the State Council, the Central Academy of Arts & Design (CAAD) was established in 1956 to meet the country’s demand for art design professionals. As New China’s first academy of art design, CAAD had the country’s best fine art educators, outstanding researchers in the field of national and folk art, and artists and designers who had returned to China after receiving their education overseas. In the nearly 40 years since then, CAAD remained the only independent academy of art and design in China.
