DESIGN NAME: Urban Green Light
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Sustainable Facade installation
INSPIRATION: The design was inspired by the unique Taiwanese urban phenomenon of metal-sheet house which one can find on almost any building’s roof top in Taiwan. These spaces often were occupied as living spaces but not equipped with appropriate standards. Our design objective is to relieve the universal destructive appearances of these metal sheets and it’s harsh living conditions.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The design is a modularized and flexible eco building facade system for subtropical climate region. The module is made of recycled plastic milk jugs and bottles with three different compositions incorporating small solar panels, planter and LED lights as needed. The module could form an extra layer of the building skin to provide shading for windows as well as preventing excessive heat for building envelope. It also uses a breathable skin concept that utilizes the wind-funnel to increase ventilation and optimize the micro-climate of the built environment.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The Urban Green Light project is an integrated and accessible green wall that ventilated with funnel wind to reduce energy needs and decrease the roof top metal-sheet house’s indoor room temperature. This prefabricated installation can be easily transported because of its off the shelf materials, two types of recycled containers with two different sizes.
The system has three module type:
Module type A is the combination of the wind funnel (small plastic bottle) and the recycled bottle planter (big plastic milk jug)
Module type B is the combination of one big solar bite on the plastic bottle cap (small plastic bottle) and the recycled bottle planter (big plastic milk jug)
Module type C is the combination of the wind funnel (small plastic bottle) and the solar bites installed around the edge of the big plastic milk jug
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This prototype took us about three months to finish, started in July 2016 in Taiwan. This project is easy to set-up and could take as little as 3 hours. It is an installation designed to reduce the heat gain of the sheet metal to house’s indoor temperature, and change metal-sheet house’s destructive appearances at the same time.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The module units are staggered together and supported by light weight metal frames to be secured on any building façade and shapes as suited. The materials are designed to be eco friendly by using recycled plastic bottles and economically sound as incentives for wider installation.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Each module is approximately 11.5mm x 11.5mm x 10 mm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: We used Ecotect thermal analysis software to simulate the heat gain or loss on the green wall performance while combining the wind funnel to the installation.
CHALLENGE: Considering the low cost of Metal Sheet housing on the roof top in Taiwan, the additional installation also needs to be designed by a low-cost materials alternative with multi functional performance.
