DESIGN NAME: Cave Bar
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Hotel Facility For Guests
INSPIRATION: This project is based on the image of stalactite cave. A plain cave has scary image but when nature creates stalactites over years and the cave becomes mysteriously beautiful and attracts people. We wanted our design to be the stalactites which attract the guests to the cave. The icicle-like glass lightings mimic stalactites and the cave glows softly with the icicle-like glass lights.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This bar is located in the site of ryokan (Japanese hotel) and this is for the guests who are staying. We only designed to highlight the beauty of nature and turned the cave into an unforgettable bar. The cave was left untouched after the former owner gave up making a tunnel and nobody saw the beauty hidden in the cave. However, when we saw the untouched cave sitting beautifully in the silent of the great nature, it was impossible to resist proposing the idea of turning the cave into an outside bar.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: As this bar is for the guests who are staying at the hotel, "cave bar" is a self-service bar. The guests can make their own drinks and enjoy it outside looking over the bay.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in 20th July 2016 and finished in 30th August 2016 in Ishikawa, Japan.

The 95mm diameter original icicle glass lights are hand blowned in 3 different heigh; 300mm, 425mm and 550mm. The total number of the icicle lights in the cave is 48.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: -
CHALLENGE: The challenge in this project was to seek the delicate balance of design and nature. What inspired us is the untouched cave and nature surrounding it, and we wanted to highlight the beauty of the nature by design. However, the balance is very delicate and if we put too much design, the beauty of the nature becomes unsophisticated, but if we design too little, the simple design can be cheesy.
