| DESIGN NAME: Heart Ring PRIMARY FUNCTION: Accessory INSPIRATION: Designed a set of stackable rings inspired by Chinese Characters that contain the word "heart" as its radical. Rings have always been provided with symbolic meanings since ancient time. There's an old say in Chinese "Men's ten fingers are linked to the heart", this shows the intimate connection between the fingers and "heart". UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This design is a set of stackable rings inspired by Chinese Characters that contain the word “heart” as its radical. The rings can be combined into different Chinese characters according to the wearer's mood and feelings. So no matter where people are from, what language they speak can all enjoy the beauty of Chinese Character. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Chinese character on gold ring means “heart” in English, this character can exist independently or become the radical of various different characters. Characters on silver rings can all group with Chinese character “heart” to form into new Chinese character. According to different mood and feeling, user can physically interact with the rings by arbitrarily combine the gold ring with different silver rings to create a new character. Or even just play with the architectural structure and enjoy the beauty of Chinese Character. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Rings material selection included silver plated with gold and silver plated with platnium SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: rings diameter are all 19mm TAGS: Chinese Character, Ring, Accessory, Culture RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Through practical research my aim is to explore and create an interesting method, to challenge the language boundaries of Chinese, which allows people all over the world to discover and enjoy the beauty of Chinese. As one of the most ancient and difficult languages, Chinese character always appears with distance. Therefor I try to let my design have a closer connection with people and their everyday life, through research ancient Chinese books, quotes inspired the form of my design. I also focus researched the structure and meanings of Chinese characters, help to add more depth to my design. CHALLENGE: The biggest challenge of this project was how to design Chinese character into a much more interesting form, as it is one of the most difficult but beautiful characters, I wish more people can have the chance to come into contact with it. Therefore I thought to integrate it with everyday object will be a simple and effective way, ultimately I decide to use ring as the main body, because ring is one of the most common accessory in everyone‘s daily life and have really close connection with human. To let the final work to be more interesting and functional, I designed a range of stackable rings, to allow people to interact with the design. NAME: Ellen Zhu PROFILE: Ellen Zhu is an Australian emerging visual artist and visual communication designer, currently completing her postgraduate design degree at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China. She completed her Bachelor Degree in Fine Arts at The University of New South Wales (UNSW ART & Design). Ellen considers herself as a mixed-media artist, Her Australia identity and China heritage strongly influenced her art and design practices. |
