| DESIGN NAME: Shroom Pendant Light Fixture PRIMARY FUNCTION: Pendant Light Fixture INSPIRATION: Kalu Interiors approached Karice in April 2016 to help them with their IDS Vancouver Central Bar Display. The theme planned was Alice in Wonderland. We were given the project carte blanche, so this is when the real fun began. Lead designer at Karice, began contemplating the story of Alice, and one night while sitting in the bathtub, design innovations began to populate the mind of our master designer. The idea of huge mushrooms began to take shape. And so began the journey to create Shroom. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Shroom is an interesting take on a Pendant luminaire. Using thin gauge aluminum shapes, the mushroom gills, thirty in all, form the unique shape of our light. Shroom is an LED pendant luminaire that illuminates from both its inner core and a down light. The illumination from within casts a unique play of light onto the aluminum gills. A beautiful array of colors results from the glow of its inner core. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The illuminated core of this light casts a warm glow on the aluminum gill structure of the light. Equipped with a down light, the functionality of this light fixture is enhanced. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project began in April 2016 in Surrey, British Columbia and finished in September 2016. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Shroom is an LED pendant luminaire that is crafted using sheet metal aluminum and acrylic. The aluminum sheet is cut using an Omax water jet machining center. Next using a CNC milling machine and lathe, the top and bottom caps are made to house the LEDs and hold the gill shapes together. The parts have a brushed finish applied on all exposed surfaces. The parts are then sent for anodizing. The aluminum is anodized in silver or gold. A 12V LED strip and an LED MR11 are used as the source of illumination. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Dimensions: 596.9mm diameter x 406.4mm high. Color: Anodized Clear or Light Gold. Lamping: LED strip 12V and MR11 bulb. TAGS: Shroom, Pendant, Light Fixture, Custom Lighting Design, Luminaire, LED, RESEARCH ABSTRACT: A mushroom shape is not your typical lighting fixture. Travelling on a whimsical theme, the gills of a mushroom heavily influenced our final design. Our design began by using AutoCAD inventor to create the light fixture shape, with the design contraints of a 50.8mm diameter center core. Once the shape was determined, the details of the top and bottom caps were drafted in AutoCAD mechanical. CNC programs were written to enable the machining of the top and bottom caps. CHALLENGE: Development of a light fixture is always the challenge. How to install the LED strips, how to attach 30 individual aluminum gills, and how to suspend the fixture.
