DESIGN NAME: Mountain Hill Chalet
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Environmental interior Design
INSPIRATION: Inspired directly from the environment itself outside the chalet. The chalet was on a hill on the mountains overlooking the village underneath. The idea was to make the interior act as an extension to the rocky hillside. The exterior environment / view was intact and would remain intact . Therefore, the materials and concept used had to co-exist with the environment.
The main thought and inspiration was to 'bring the outside inside'.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The design is characterized by its materials which are mostly Eco friendly and reused materials. The main purpose of this Residence is to serve as a relax hub for its visitors and owners.
The materials co exist with the environment offering the owners a relaxing experience both inside and outside the chalet.
Natural local stone was used for the interior and reclaimed wood was installed for the floors and wooden beams.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: No walls where used on the ground floor interior so that the user would have unobstructed views of the exterior . Therefore if the residents are either in the kitchen or seating area, they can enjoy the exterior, therefore bringing nature closer and creating a relax hub and a cozy atmosphere for the residents.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The construction of the house started May 2014 and finished completely in June 2016.
The challet is located in Ayia Irini, a picturesque village on the mountains, in Nicosia, Cyprus.
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Interior Space and Exhibition Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: To execute the initial concept , concrete and brick needed to be the primary material to be used in the construction together with special thermal insulation.
The atmosphere was created by the use of reused timber, local stone and natural materials for the interior.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The total covered areas of the house were 250m2 plus a 100 m2 covered veranda on the ground floor which features an outdoor fireplace, seating and dining area.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: 'Chalet interior design concept' was the primary goal for the final interior together with the materials that could be used for the interior. Materials where very carefully selected, making sure that they were mostly sustainable materials.
CHALLENGE: The main challenge was the careful selection of materials but also the actual placement of the materials used to create this interior space.
The stone used was cut on site by hand, and then installed one by one on the walls.
The environmental design concept is fairly new to Cyprus as there is not much wood that can be reused. So reclaimed wood was imported from abroad for this project.
All the furniture, materials etc were carefully studied and designed to meet this concept.
