DESIGN NAME: Dish Drawer™
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Drawer Dishwasher
INSPIRATION: by a team of Fisher & Paykel engineers standing in a kitchen talking about the poor design of the dishwasher door. Drawers, they reasoned, were practical and easy to use so why not put a dishwasher in a drawer? They built a mock-up that looked similar to a filing cabinet, a design inspired by a conversation about the changing nature of the kitchen.
Every element of a traditional dishwasher – from the motor to the electronics board to the plumbing system – had to be redesigned. Undaunted, Fisher
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Fisher & Paykel Appliances debuts the new models that are quieter and more energy and water-efficient than ever including being Energy Star certified. They are more durable, thanks to rigorous testing for 20 years’ of continuous use and thoughtfully designed with an emphasis on sleek lines and quality construction. Models can incorporate clever features such as flexible stacking and sanitize mode. The newest generation shows Fisher & Paykel’s dedication to continuous improvement and innovation.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: We paid a lot of attention to resolving the little details that make the latest DishDrawer a truly premium appliance. Through intensive focus group research, we listened to consumers, designers and architects and developed a new flat door design, which fits seamlessly with your kitchen, allowing a truly flush installation with cabinetry.
This new design provides a unified product family match across the whole Fisher & Paykel kitchen. By using a full height stainless steel door panel, solid machined aluminum handle & top cap, and turned stainless steel buttons, we’ve brought premium materials to the customer’s fingertips.
An ergonomically improved, consolidated user interface drives both drawers, and we’ve increased wash flexibility through adding wash modifiers. These 3 variations allow 15 different wash programs to suit any load requirements:
• Extra dry: Improves drying performance by increasing the active ventilation period and final rinse temperature.
• Quick wash: Decreases wash time by up to 30% without compromising performance.
• Sanitize: Meets the strict NSF 184 UL standard to provide peace of mind for young families – perfect for baby bottles.
We have considered everything from delicate glassware to when designing a flexible racking system that allows the user to configure the wash environment to suit any load. The cutlery basket features removable containers that can be used to extend the basket’s capacity or to contain smaller plastic items that may otherwise be thrown around during the wash cycle.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: In October 2013 we conducted consumer research in Auckland, New Zealand and Sydney, Australia with participants recruited from our key target segments. We also conducted interviews with leading architects and kitchen designers. Visual prototypes were constructed and reviewed alongside prototype ovens and refrigeration to provide context within our product family.
Some of the key objectives were to understand: Fit with Fisher & Paykel’s Visual Brand Language, Enable ‘Design to Match’ across our kitchen family, and deeply understand touch points that engineer customer value.
The move away from soft radii and curved geometry of the previous model had very strong appeal with both consumers and architects alike. The desire for a completely flat door design, which fits seamlessly with your kitchen, allowing a truly flush installation with cabinetry was particularly strong within the architect forums.
Alongside the design research, we continually utilised our resource of field test sites to evaluate ‘real world’ usability – interface and customer dish loading, wash performance, kitchen fit, and quality perception.
CHALLENGE: The greatest challenges were:
- Creating a recessed handle in a 20mm thick door that still provides great ergonomics and usability, with premium materials for high perceived quality.
- Forming a full height steel door panel with tight radii and crisp interface details. To achieve the desired fit and finish, the manufacturing process must achieve very tight tolerances.
