| DESIGN NAME: Guangzhou Jinyi Cinemas PRIMARY FUNCTION: Cinema INSPIRATION: Meteor is a shortlived but beautiful astronomical observation. The designers want to pay tribute to filmmakers through the design of this cinema, to remind the audience of the years of hard work behind their relatively short enjoyment. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: In the lobby, long rectangular-cuboid decorations extend from the ceiling, mimicking the motion of a meteor shower streaking through the sky. The cuboids point at two directions to enhance the 3D vibrant atmosphere, and the edges are slanted to create an illusion of speed. Other features in the cinema are also linear and oblique to match with the ceiling feature. Meteor shower is transformed into flat rectangular shaped-stones in the corridor, which look as if they are growing from the ground. Meteor shower is portrayed in a unique way in each auditorium to surprise the audience. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: - PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Guangzhou, China |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Aluminum plate, steel, composite stone, marble, artificial stone, tiles, sound-absorbing panels, carpet SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 4145 sq. metre TAGS: Meteor, cinema, meteor show, shooting star, cinematography, aluminium RESEARCH ABSTRACT: - CHALLENGE: As the project was located in a cinema, the project was restricted by harsher fire regulations, especially for the materials used in the design. Earth tone was adopted as the main color theme of the design to create an elegant and grand atmosphere. In the beginning, the designers wanted to use wood in the ceiling feature to represent the meteor shower, but it was impossible due to fire regulations. We had to think of an alternative that could produce the same effect but complies with the regulations.
