DESIGN NAME: PolyPlay Web
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Inspirational Online Design Platform
INSPIRATION: PolyPlay Web is the digital version of an education unit, consultancy office, and research lab. In 2004 PolyU Design opened the Toy Design Lab to investigate the realities of the toy industry, one of HK's top three export industries in terms of revenue. In 2007 it was renamed PolyPlay Lab as it extended its research scope to explore how play could enhance design education, practice, and research. The lab fosters from within HK a culture of innovation embracing creativity, technology, and communication to support the design community.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: PolyPlay Web is an online inspirational platform promoting innovative experimental approaches to design. It showcases Hong Kong's creative potential, facilitating the Made in Hong Kong to HK-designed paradigm shift in value perception. It is used to inspire students, extol innovative approaches, inform research, commercialize projects, and foster industry collaborations.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: PolyPlay investigates the relevance of play to design practice, exploration, education, and research. Contending that design shapes culture, and considering Huizinga's contention that culture is the outcome of play; its research focus aims at revealing the mutually beneficial relationships between play, design, and education. Taking cues from research experiments in design for play, PolyPlay uses play theory and toy design practices to inspire designers and inform better design practices.
The PolyPlay Web online design platform showcases experimentation carried out in teaching, research, and consultancy at the confines of all three fields. It helps designers seeking to enrich awareness of the cultural relevance of their practice through the lens of play; and play academics working to expand their perspective on play's cultural agency by bridging their field to design.
CHALLENGE: PolyPlay's approach includes user-as-player-centered research probes; creative techniques borrowed from conceptual, outsider, and pop art; experimental creative processes such as Hackshops; critical analysis of interactivity conventions; appreciation of traditional and contemporary objects; and communication tactics inspired by poetry and humor. It showcases over 150 playworks categorized along 9 branches of play. Curation is based on a natural emergence of trends shaped over the years by student preferences, who are encouraged to play with industry codes to nurture personal perspectives.
