DESIGN NAME: DCIDL Project
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Workspace
INSPIRATION: The oppressive working condition of the staff in the old office has inspired the designer. Watching the staff buried themselves into their work at a small desk every day was like watching them got trapped in a cage. How to strike a balance between design profession and relaxing working atmosphere was the major concern when planning the interiors of a design firm. With such consideration, the designer wanted to build a new office without boundaries, letting staff to free their bodies and also their mind while creating a relaxing workplace for staff to gain inspiration.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Aiming to offer one continuous space, the designer wanted to create an interactive working environment and further highlight transparency and spaciousness. As such, glass was widely used as partition, serving the function of separating space and facilitating interaction between staff. Besides, some playful elements were added to stimulate staff to breed ideas. Staff can enjoy playing snooker, reading books or having snacks anytime they want. The overall design emphasized on implementing environmentally friendly practices, such as the energy saving lighting system.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Sophisticated choice of lighting effects were used to distinguish between each specific zones. Basically, the layout was divided into reception, leisure and entertainment zone, reading area, resource room, conference room, design department and room of the director. The designer made use of glass doors and curtains as partition when necessary. The glass accordion door also added continuity and fluidity to the space when it was fully opened.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in March 2015 and finished in October 2015 in San Po Kong, Hong Kong.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Before starting the renovation, the original setting of the old unit had to be demolished and rearranged. Since black palette was
extensively used throughout the entire office, different kinds of black materials were used to do mix and match. The grey wallpaper helped give shades of layering to the interiors. Lacquered black furniture, black rugs and curtains built the base tone of the office while walnut wood, white painting and the Manhattan night view digital print feature wall added a sense of warmth and colourful elements in the project.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The overall design emphasized on the implementation of environmentally friendly practices, such as the use of energy saving lighting system. Light sources vary automatically, turn on when one get closer, turn off when one walk away. Smart living system was also introduced to the project. Different sizes of TV set and Hi-Fi system were installed throughout the workspace, imitating various household contexts. As such, the design team could simply demonstrate various effects of the smart living system to clients.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Most of the research information was from the design questions asked by clients. The designer decided to provide answers in the design, letting clients to have hands-on experience when visiting the office. Apart from cooperating with different suppliers to compare the texture and colour of materials, discussing energy saving plans and methods about the smart living system and lighting system with engineers was also needed.
CHALLENGE: Solving the historical problem of the office was one of the most challenging part for the project. The office, which was damaged and dilapidated inside, is located in a 50-year-old factory building. The seepage problem was very serious so lots of preliminary reparation and water-proof measures had to be done before starting the renovation.
