Big data is giving us a clear picture of the world by intangible yet accurate statistical analysis. The existence of data around us is ubiquitous, but we seldom realize it due to its subtlety. Carpe Diem reveals and stamps the instant moment of a set of meaningful data as a snapshot.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Life is measured in moments which mark our life, cornerstones in time. Carpe Diem captures the most valuable moment in life, the arrival of a newborn. The egg symbolizes new life, and the crack is a broken line graph that displays a snapshot of big data, the global birth rate of the moment that the newborn arrived the world. The night lamp creates a cozy atmosphere with a recall of the sweet memory. It can be customized as a unique gift by providing the date and time of birth in the online store.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
It can be placed in the living room or bedroom to create a warm and relaxing atmosphere, to let users remember the delight of having a new family member. Besides, the upper half of the lampshade can be removed easily, thus it is convenient to change the light bulb.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in Feb 2016 and finished in May 2016 in Hong Kong.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The lampshade is made from acrylic and manufactured in 3 parts. The upper and lower parts which are fixed in size for every order, are produced in matte white and ceramic-like finishing to imitate the texture of an egg. The broken-line graph part which is varied for every order according to different sets of data collected, is connected with an inner part to hold the structure and produced in transparent and matte finishing to keep the consistency in texture.

The hardest part of the project is creating variable designs according to different sets of data collected in the online store, while keeping the consistency of aesthetic for each design.
