DESIGN NAME: Jolle
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Cradle
INSPIRATION: Our product range is inspired by the cradle to cradle principle, the health impact of stone pine and the modern timeless optic. The idea of expanding our product range, which till then included all kinds of sleeping room furniture e.g. beds, side-tables, cabinets, etc., brought us to design a bed for children - considering the fact, that stone pine panders to a smooth sleep. Therefore traditional wooden cradles and the Scandinavian design inspired us to develop our Jolle.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Jolle, a baby cradle produced and designed in Austria combines health and sustainable aspects with traditional craft and modern design. The essential oils of stone pine, the wood the Jolle is made out of, guarantee a very soothing sleep for babies. According to a study of Joanneum Research, 3500 heart beats can be saved by sleeping in a stone pine bed, which is equal to one hour cardiac performance. Next to health and sustainable aspects the optical design is significant.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Before usage: Bed, skids, mattress and felt cover have to be assembled.
Usage: The cradle is made for babies in their first months to sleep and rest in a cosy environment. The smooth rocking allows the child to fall asleep easily. Jolle is moveable from one room to another so your baby can always stay by your side.
After usage: The cradle is a long lasting product, which can be passed on from generation to generation. For storage we advise to disassemble the skids from the bed-box.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in January 2014 and finished in February 2016 in Bludenz, Austria and was part of an aws (Austria Wirtschaftsservice) funding.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Jolle is produced in a carpentry in Vorarlberg, Austria, which is specialised to produce stone pine furniture. The cradle itself is also made out of stone pine. The CNC technology is indispensable for these kind of furniture-production. Especially the skids wouldn’t be produceable without a CNC milling, because of its precise curve to provide a smooth swinging. All the other work, preparation, assembly and finishing work is done by hand in our carpentry.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Jolle is made up of a wooden bed box, skids, a felt cover and a mattress. All these parts are made out of natural materials and are free of metal or any synthetic substances.
Dimensions: Cradle (incl. felt cover) 936 x 760 x 875 mm
Mattress: 900 x 400 mm
Materials: skids and bed: 100% Austrian stone pine (untreated)

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: A product investigation and a market analyses about traditional and modern children sleeping places, like cribs, cradles, etc., have been done to expand our product range. Through the research our aim was to develop a wooden cradle by meeting the demand of modern design. During the design process a further aspect was to adopt the production to the cradle to cradle principle. In that case we had to focus on the research and testing of special wooden joints to create a product free from metal, all out of natural material.
CHALLENGE: The challenge was the technical feasibility by using wood without any metal parts e.g. screws. The main parts of a cradle are the rocking skids. It took us a long time to find the perfect curve, which provides a smooth rocking.
A further challenge were the joints between the bed-box and the skids, as the customers should be able to match these two parts together without using any metal or synthetic material.
