DESIGN NAME: Eclipse Set of Nesting Noodle Bowls
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Noodle Bowl Set
INSPIRATION: With numerous requests for a handmade ceramic noodle bowl, we began brainstorming attributes of 'the' perfect noodle bowl. It was important to us that these attributes fit into our working aesthetic. We often play with functional forms composed from sphere, hemisphere and circle combinations.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Eclipse noodle bowl set is designed with hot, delicious broth and noodles in mind. Each bowl is double-walled allowing you to hold and carry a bowlful of steaming broth without burning your hands. The thin, or sipping, edge of the offset rim allows you to savor every drop of that broth.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: When in use, the Eclipse Noodle Bowl Set upgrades the experience of serving & eating noodles. The insulated bowl protects hands from scalding broth while the sipping edge allows one to slurp & sip. The colorful rims places the main event, the noodles, within a frame.
When not in active use, the Eclipse Noodle Bowl set nestles within each other and becomes a display piece. Their offset rims create patterns of color reminiscent of the bands of light during a total eclipse which can be transformed by rotating the bowls.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: We began talking about this project in February 2015 in Baltimore, MD. The first medium Eclipse was exhibited at NYNow in August 2015. The rest of the set was finished by December 2015 and exhibited at NYNow in January 2016.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The initial designs were made solid on the potter's wheel. A 3-piece plaster mold was then made from the originals. The final pieces are slip-cast porcelain.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Large: 235mm diameter x 108mm
Medium: 193mm diameter x 82.5mm
Small: 165mm diameter x 58.5mm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Our objective was to design a visually stunning and modern version of a functional noodle bowl. To address the basic elements of enjoying a bowl of noodles, our research was experiential. What would change an ordinary bowl into an exceptional noodle bowl? We ate noodles, took notes and discussed our findings. We wanted it insulated with a thin edge where one could sip the last of the broth. Why a nesting set? In our early tests with the medium-sized Eclipse, we wanted a larger size & we wanted a bowl for toppings. The three nesting sizes, with their flat, offset rims, create that stunning visual we were hoping for.
CHALLENGE: The most challenging obstacle in the design process for the Eclipse Bowls was physical. Once we knew what we wanted to make, we had problems getting the bowls to nest as we wanted them to. Clay shrinks and the large bowl shank proportionally more than the small bowl. It took some back and forth until they were correctly spaced within each other & their rims were lined up on a horizonal plane.
