DESIGN NAME: The Alchemist
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Office
INSPIRATION: Inspired from the story below:-
“Once upon a time, an alchemist walked into a forest, he buried a bag of base metals under the moonlight. A tree that grew so big and strong in a couple of minutes that it reached up to heaven and could be seen from anywhere on earth. After that, he developed the elixir of life, which would confer youth and longevity.”
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Our client’s business began as a metal trading company. Through years of diversification it has now become a leader in the trading of recycled metals and e-scraps.
We have woven an organic “ribbon” around the working spaces which in turn defines circulation volume in between. The “ribbon” is composed of thousands of recycled timber planks that are hinged with recovered metal works, chained and anchored to the floor as if they magically grew out of the ground.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Once you enter the space, you can see through all rooms in between the gaps of intersected wood logs, view keeps transforming.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in November 2015 in Hong Kong and finished in February 2016.
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Interior Space and Exhibition Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Basically the whole space is formed by a series of recycled wood logs hanging from the ceiling with metal chains. Each intersected anchor point must be very accurate so we provided nearly 200 drawings for the contractor just for the production of the wooden feature.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Each recycled wood log with the size of 100mm(Width) x 100mm(Height) x 2000mm(Length).
TAGS: Sustainable, recycle, wood, industrial, alchemist
RESEARCH ABSTRACT: We tried different wooden joint fixing methods and at the end we came up a metal locking system at the end of the metal chain to hang the whole wooden partition complex. The metal locking system can be unscrewed to dismantle the whole wooden partition complex for future office removal. The whole system can be reused for the future, like Legos.
CHALLENGE: The most challenging one was to persuade our client for this crazy office design idea especially in Hong Kong, usually the office tenants in Hong Kong stay at one office space for around 2 years and no one is willing to spend too much energy and time for designing an office. This case is exceptional.
