DESIGN NAME: Borderline
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Bookend and tablet stand
INSPIRATION: Borderline was designed by Studio Algoritmo for Officine Tamborrino. Its name draws inspiration directly from the current economical and productive situation, where many are the markets in which it is observed a partial or total change of materials, media and / or technologies. The same happens in the world of the book market, where it is noticed a turnover and an overlap between the dear, old and material book and the creation of new technologies for reading (e-book). Borderline tries to make live in peaceful harmony two ways of thinking about the reading and interact with it.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Simple and colorful, it is at the same time a stand for tablets and a rack for books.
Borderline is characterized by minimal and yet multifunctional forms which meet several traditional and modern needs.
Its special inclination allows reading in the most various situations: reading recipes or watching tutorial while cooking, reading while typing at your desk or just storing books on your bedside table.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The fusion of the functions of a new technological support to those of the classic bookrack helps the objects to find the right place in a market where old and new products coexist. This fusion helps also to compact and organize the objects themselves and relative spaces like the bedside table, the work desk and the kitchen shelves. In such spaces, novels, magazines and recipe books still coexist (and probably will always coexist) but new techologies will always find more space. Borderline is a linear object but multifunctional, that comply with multiple needs, old and new.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in September 2013 in Rome and finished in November 2013 in Rome, and was exhibited in Milano Design Week, Ventura Project- Zona Lambrate, in April 2014

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The object comes from a careful analysis of how the old and the new reading supports could coexist and interact. The Paper book Era is not ending but a change of needs and business expectations is taking place. The shape comes from the need to create an object fully exploiting the company know-how, without new investments or energy waste. The main inspiration is the television ALGOL Brionvega (1964), that had to solve the same needs (light weight, color, declivity for an easer viewing and use).
CHALLENGE: The challenge was to design a product that would gather several functions (tablet stand, bookrack), while maintaining a simple, minimal and recognizable design. The project has been developed respecting the needs and the productive capacities of the company. Borderline comes from a sheet of steel, from which individual strips are cut and then folded and colored. So doing, the waste of material is minimized and the production costs are lowered.
