DESIGN NAME: Yorkshire
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Side Table Dog House
INSPIRATION: The metal corners, studs, hardware, stitching and vegan leather trim and handles are all details inspired by traditional trunks and replicated into this design. We replaced the traditional lid of a trunk with a drawer, so the surface can still be used to place other objects, like lamps, or a drink. With pets being such a large part of so many families, we wanted the Cosmos to combine home elegance with comfortable pet living. That is why we have also integrated a dog house into the lower deck of the Cosmos, making it the perfect side table for pet lovers who also enjoy beautiful home interiors.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This is a multifunctional side table in a modernised trunk design, it includes a drawer at the top and a dog house underneath.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Cosmos is a side table with a drawer for storage that acts also as a dog house. It was designed to fit elegantly into homes without disrupting interior asthetics and at the same time provide a sleeping space for pets.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in April 2016 and finished in August 2016 in Hong Kong.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The production process is kept quite similar to traditional trunk construction. The interior frame is made of wood, cut, sanded, glued and then nailed together. The vegan leather panels are then cut from stencils, edges folded and stitched by hand then glued to the wood frame. Then the vegan leather trim goes through the same hand cut and sew process and is then nailed onto the body by hand. The metal corners and other hardwares which were designed and moulded specifically for this product are then applied to the top and secured with metal studs, each stud is hammered in by hand.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Our research objective was to understand the history of Trunks, their aesthetics, what gave them their elegance and romance. And to understand their construction, how they were traditionally constructed and why those methods were used. We began the research by studying vintage trunks from trunk collectors who also restored them. They gave us great insight into where the trunks originated from and also how they were constructed originally. Also, we needed to research what types of dog houses are currently made to be put in interior spaces, and what their designs and methodology was.
CHALLENGE: After extensive research we were able to come up with a design that resonated the aesthetics of a trunk that functioned as a side table in interior spaces and at the same time provides a cozy place for your pet to nap. All the function and still looks elegant right next to your sofa.
