DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Hyatt Place Luoyang

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Hotel

INSPIRATION:
The inspiration of design comes from Luoyang’s historical culture. Impressions of Luoyang city such as: Longmen Grottoes, historical towers and ancient empire costumes become the origin point of inspirations for interior color tones, textures and artwork design selections. The overall concept of re-contextualization results one unique design which integrates the local heritage with contemporary interior design; The spirit of Luoyang lives on in modern attire and Luoyang Hyatt Place becomes a new local landmark.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Located amid the historic city of Luoyang, this new construction hotel features 250 guest rooms and suites. The design overlay the contemporary hotel with a sleek, sophisticated atmosphere that references the city’s rich context and history. The design celebrates the places where the functional spaces and the radiance of light on the sky lobby floor converge. Staying true to the core values of the Hyatt Place brand, the clean, relaxed and youthful nature was revived and highlighted. Stones and tiles, metal, textured glass and wood create an earthy architectural foundation into which subtle textures and sculptural forms are layered. Screen elements maintain the transparency and connection between spaces while provoking curiosity within the guests. The lobby receives the hotel guests with an open and authentic atmosphere. The public area promotes socialization between guests by implementing a multi-purpose bar along the wall. It serves as a bar, a service counter and a Reception Desk. The rest of the public area is made up of comfy lounge sofas, a complimenting combination of tables and chairs, colorful carpets, playful lighting fixtures and floor to ceiling art works.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
All the public areas for guests are mainly located on one floor in order to facilitate a high efficiency for hotel operation. The design provides the freedom to our hotel guest on easily moving from one activity zone to another. The whole public area then becomes a big living room for our guests to enjoy various actives like: reading, dining, socializing, meeting, working on computers and web surfacing.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The design started in February 2014 and the hotel opened in May 2016 in Luoyang, China.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
In order to keep align with Hyatt Place brand, the main materials selected for wall and floor finishes such as vinyl wall coverings, paints, porcelain tiles, wood and laminates, metals and glass improve the maintenance efficiency. At areas like the sky lobby reception, we highlight the use of stone for the flooring in order to satisfy expectations and preferences from local guests. While for the furniture we mainly used wood and fabrics to create a cozy and comfortable atmosphere.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
3200 sq. meters for public areas, 13500 sq. meters for guest room areas; Total 250 room keys, 248 for typical guest rooms and 2 for suites. RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
This experimental project was focused on developing an effective interior design approach to optimize the design standard from international hotel operator to be successful in the Chinese market. Hotel guest experiments on aesthetics and level of comfort were collected for evaluating the design outcome of each design approach. The success of Hyatt Place Luoyang project demonstrates how to convey the local heritage inspiration into a popular modern aesthetics hotel design. The result can be adopted on other similar hotel project in China.

CHALLENGE:
According to relative market study, we found that the traditional look and feel of Hyatt place hotel in US market does not meet the expectation of urban hotel from Chinese traveler. The challenge was to create a new urban business hotel, that guests are happy to visit and stay in, while at the same time maintaining the DNA of the Hyatt Place brand identity.
