DESIGN NAME: The Joy of Fish
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residential House
INSPIRATION: The main design concept is escaping from the center and marginalization. The use of concrete, bamboo, plants and recycled materials reflect the natural surroundings and respect for the land. While inside the house, people feel like connected and living alongside nature. It emotes the original desire of returning to our origin. It is probably one of the best ways to describe the joy of fish mentioned in the book named Zhuangzi.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Sitting in the suburbs, this house enjoys the convenience of the city and the intimacy of nature. To bring it even closer to nature the designer decided to minmise design and incorporate more environmentally friendly materials expose the beautiful 270-degree view. Different from a normal floor plan, the living room and the dining area are on the upper floor, and the bedrooms are on the lower floor so that people can make the most of the terrace and scenery on the top floor.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The space has been designed to be a home resort not a normal residence. The storage space in the building is minimized relative to the entertaining spaces in the living room, sitting room and the dining area. On the upper floor is where the most natural light is and what is considered the best view and so the designer decided to create an open space combining the living room, activity room, dining room and kitchen all together. All the family and friends can be in the same space and can share moments while doing different kinds of activities. Adults can have some wine and snacks at the dining table and the kids can play games beside them. The design of open space brings people together and helps facilitate relaxation.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in May 2015 in Taiwan and finished in August 2015.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The designer retained the original concrete floor of the building to reveal the pure simplicity of the space. By polishing the surface of the concrete, the floor has become more durable and easier to clean. Recycled and raw materials, such as wood and bamboo, are widely used in this unique building to reflect its natural surroundings. Decorating the house with these materials can reduce waste. At the same time, it allows the building to bring out different textures and add more character in the details.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: This house has two floors and is approximately 139 square meters. The upper floor is about 63 square meters and is slightly smaller than the lower floor (roughly 76 square meters). The building sits in the southwest and faces the northeast, which makes this house cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. The building is located between the city center and suburbia. It is perfectly located to enjoy the convenience of transportation and the serenity of the surrounding greenery.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: A study published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives found that people who live in greener areas, with more vegetation around, have a lower risk of mortality. To live nearby nature could have even more health benefits such as mental health improvement, social engagement and physical activity. The designer tried to transform the concept of Actionless Governance, promoted by the great Chinese philosopher Zhuangzi, into a new way of interior design. Zhuangzi promoted carefree wandering and becoming one with the Way by following nature. The designer utilised this concept and combined it with the idea of less is more to create a practical living space without unnecessary decoration. Focusing on the basic needs of living and relaxing is the most important thing. Large floor-to-ceiling windows are a prominent feature in this house and embrace the surrounding nature.
CHALLENGE: The biggest challenge is to create a character of this place according to conditions of the site under a limited budget constraint. People should live in a comfortable and affordable house. The designer tried to make a living place aesthetic and functional at the same time.
