DESIGN NAME: Synchro
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Folding bike
INSPIRATION: Enable or facilitate the use of bicycles in everyday life, allowing it to be carried on public or individual transportation, without taking up much space in the workplace, school or others. Its main advantage in relation to other existing folding bikes on the market is your maneuverability and ergonomics, similar to fixed bikes. The inspiration for the Synchro folding system came from the observation of insect and arachnid paws, the joints of which allow for a large retraction of this parts.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Folding bike, with a similar size to a common mountain bike, but when articulated it is extremely compact and can be transported in a backpack or large bag, or conducted through the handlebars, as a cart. Ergonomics and driveability compatible with fixed models. Less volume of materials, with only one tube in the handlebar and a single point of attachment in the rear wheel, which together with the use of lightweight materials, contributes greatly to the low weight of the bicycle.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The Syncro folding bike has a simpler operation than the models available in the market. To fold it, simply turn the handlebar by 180 degrees, actuate the unlocking knob under the seat and articulate the two parts of the frame. The bicycle can be moved by the handlebar like a cart, because even folded, it maintains its two wheels operants, spinning freely. Alternatively, you can turn the handlebar to make it even more compact, and so carry the bike in the backpack that comes with the set.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project of the Synchro folding bike was started in February 2015 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and was finished in April 2016, in the same city and country.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Structure in aluminum encapsulated by plastic polymers, with the insert molding for plastic injection process, which makes the part lightweight and extremely resistant. Handlebar and supports in alloy of chrome-molybdenum steel. The materials used in design are lighter and stronger than standard found in the market, and the decrease in the number of parts (the front fork, for example, is formed by only one tube, rather than two), contributes to the low weight of the bicycle.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Open bike: 670.23 mm (W) x 1940.0 mm (D) x 1130.60 mm (H)
Folded bike: 340.96 mm (W) x 750.35 mm (D) x 1240.86 mm (H)
Weight: around 10 kg (estimated)
The Synchro folding bike comes with a reinforced canvas backpack, suitable for your transport and protection; the complete set is packed in a corrugated carton, and its assembly is extremely easy, by simply fixing the wheels and coupling the brake system (the cables are rolled and adjusted automatically, when the bike is folded).

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: A survey was made among users of various models of folding bikes for sale on the market, through personal interviews and also over the internet. In this research, it was possible to identify the main desires of this type of consumer, which were organized according to their relevance and quantity of citations. They seek convenience and mobility, and want an extremely compact product, that can be transported easily, with ergonomics and functionality similars to the fixed models.
CHALLENGE: The use of technological materials, unusual in the construction of bicycles, has become the biggest challenge for the viability of Synchro. It was necessary for the aluminum to integrate perfectly with the plastic, with a viable cost and that the process was well spread, with a lot of suppliers. The plastic injection insertion was then defined, becase is a relatively simple technology and widely used in various industry sectors, and which proved to be perfect for the intended purpose.
