A while ago i heard some news about a message in a bottle thrown into the sea by a biologist in 1906, asking for it to be returned to the Marine Biological Association in England...and was found in 2015 by a German lady and posted back to England 109 years later... I have inspired by this story and started to think about possibilities. I think it was all about finding connections: to throw a bottle into the sea in the hope that someone they’ve never met, in a place they may never have visited, might one day find it and can share some information...
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Contact is a redesigned wine cork to make people create new and unic connections by using a very old way of communication: “sending message in a bottle”. Contact is thought to be a gift product and aimed to evoke some curiosity by presenting nearly in a standart wine cork appearance. Since the receiver is unknown and the result is not so clear, we can also call this action as an approach to support the inner personal journey of someone or as an adventurous game. It is powered by a photovolcaic panel, has a blinking light signal during night and let you record your voice or any other sound and play back. Device thought to have GPS function which makes possible to trace the journey of the bottle and to check its current location via smart phone.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Design can fit any standart wine bottle, just like any other standart cork. it needs to be synchronized with your smart phone(by a software and Bluetooth technology) and to activate the gps function. Then you will be able to trace the route of your bottle and check its current position on your phone. You also need to put some sand or anything that can create an extra weight in the bottle; this is necessary to able to keep its vertical position in the water. you can write a note and put some other personal or universal items also record any sounds you like(may be saying hi in different languages or explain your purpose..). And then leave it into the sea by expecting to be found by someone, at a location that you could never imagine... and create a new connection..
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
I have started to think about this project as an idea 3-4 months ago in Istanbul and for during last 2 months i am working on it quite intensively.
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Injection molded plastics material for the main body(abs): to give the structure and to be used for electronical housing(like gps and other electronical circuits). Polycarbonate plastics for transparent parts where led will be embedded for lighting, rechargable battery(nimh) as energy source and solar panel on top, standart cork material as a cover on the main body. Package will be mostly made up of transparent plastics(pmma).
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Main Body: 22mm x 22mm x 48mm. Package: 36mm x 60mm x 30mm.
Device is using solar energy to recharge its battery which
is activated whenever it meets with the sun light.
GPS function is enabled by pushing a button on the main body (pressing same button for a longer while also starts the process of synchronizing the device with the smart phone by using a software and bluetooth connection).
Main body is water-proof,
equipped with led lighting. Led is embedded on the upper part of the body and a microphone/speaker on the lower part.
Lighting is activated when there is no environmental light.
Record and playback functions can be activated by the buttons on the main body and the lower surface.

I have made some online research about the stories of people who sends a message in the bottle: when and why it started, who finds them and what happens next... I tried to understand why what is their basic motivation for using this very indirect way of communication. I have also made researches if this device could be used in emergency stuations; but i chose not to focus on this part, i rather focused on more emotional and practical ways of bringing the idea into a product for any ordinary person. I have made some research about gps technologies, to understand the way it works and if it is applicable for a device such this. At some other levels of the project, design was including an integrated volume to be used instead of bottle, at this point i have also made some research about buoys and some sea creatures such as squids to understand the relationship between their moves in the water and the body structure they have.
The hardest part for me was classifying the product and to describe its main function clearly. Because even though phisically this is a very technical product; it is based on very emotional; even romantic purposes.
