DESIGN NAME: Cyclone Mask 1
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Half Facepiece Respirator
INSPIRATION: During my compulsory community service in Austria at the Red Cross I got to know how many people are suffering from a respiratory disease. A lot of these diseases are related to dust. One key finding in my research was that the users often don't use the dust protection and if they use it, they throw it away after one use. Thereby, current dust masks have a big ecological footprint and are huge pollution for the environment and waste industry.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Cyclone Mask 1 is a safety respirator in combination with a cyclone separator. There is no other mask that uses a pre separation system, so Cyclone Mask 1 offers an unique selling point. The RFID app system provides feedback to the user and the status of the used filters. So the user knows when to change it and how contaminated it is.
Due to the cyclone separation and the RFID app system the filters provide a longer lifecycle and lower the ecological footprint.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Cyclone Mask 1 is a safety respiratory mask with a pre filter system. Due to the pre filtration and an app the filters provide a longer lifecycle and lower the ecological footprint.
At the same time the general size of the filters is reduced, due to the fact that the big particles are separated during the pre seperation process. The strap over the neck is compatible with current safety products on the market e.g. helmets, glasses and headsets. A magnetic buckle is used and it closes by its own and can be easily used with gloves or dirty hands.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in March 2016 in Linz and finished in June 2016 in Linz. Final Presentation was at the end of June 2016.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Human Centered Design strategies were used to get to know the user and the different dust masks. For this also questionaires and interviews with experts and construction workers were made.
Different CAD Softwares were used and also sketched on paper and digital with a Wacom Cintiq. Several prototypes were produced and tested to get the best result. For the prototypes different materials e.g. cardboard, straps, and disposable dust masks were applied . The final design model was SLS printed and afterwards sanded and painted.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width 115 mm x Depth 105 mm x Height 152 mm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: I interviewed 3 different construction workers and made 18 questionnaires to the topic dust protection. For material research 3 experts were interviewed to different topics and asked for their feedback. To calculate the dimensions of the cyclone I used different studies for correct information. For the magnetic buckle and the strap system each 3 different mockups were given to 10 persons for testing. Insights gathered proved its sufficiency. The cyclone were tested with different powders.
CHALLENGE: The hardest part was to generate a product with a good usability. At the same time the product has to be very durable because it is used in very hostile environment. But the shape can not be to aggressive because it is worn in the face. So the common shapes were rethought and form followed function to get the result.
One other really hard part was to find the right technology to make the dust protection more sustainable. For this interviews were made with experts and several prototypes and tests were produced.
