PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Food waste composting machine

INSPIRATION:
In the world, we only consumed 40% food and waste 60% food. Each family average throw 1-2 Kg of food wast, only 1.6% of food waste was recycled, most of them end up in landfill and waste incinerator that generate greenhouse gases emission. How to have an ecological environment and make our Earth clean, the problem of food waste we need to face the fact, so one of solution is that design a Food Waste Composting Machine for the home user and start to work on the environmental protection from our daily life.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Green Eater can compress the food waste to 5% of its size and convert it into valuable compost pellets for conveniently fertilizing flower, plant. Use the Screw Cylinder for drying process fast, making compost pellets at any time to provide home keeping away from bad odors, insects and growing bacteria. Also, operate and control by computerized program for energy consumption efficiency. The other unique property is that the compost pellet holder is a transparent shape, let user directly look the food waste converting to valuable stuff that represent "DEAD to ALIVE" transformation.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Open the top cover of Green Eater and drop the food waste into the mixing chamber, after the top cover is pushed down and closed securely for the Reed Switch detecting, the Green Eater will be turned on automatically for making compost pallets. If the top cover is opened during the processing of operation, the Green Eater will stop operation immediately. The mixing chamber equips 3 blunt blades and one fix blade driving by the computerized brushless motor, it shatters food waste to become small size fragment. The fragments will go through the slots and drop into screw cylinder, moving the fragments downward and dry them by the heater on the side wall. At the end of screw cylinder has a "Composting Press Heat Mold" the semi-drying fragments will be pressed and dried out completely to become the compost pellets. When the Green Eater completes the compost pellets, two blue lights would be lit up at the inner tube and turn off the Green Eater. Inner tube is made of heat resistant engineering plastic, protect user to reach screw cylinder. The main component of Green Eater can be taken out from the compost pellet holder easily, the other micro sensor is installed at inside of Green Eater, so the machine will be turned off automatically when it is taken out. On the compost pellet holder has scales for showing user how many food we waste on each day and educate family not to waste food. At anytime, user can pour out compost pellets for fertilizing flower, plant or taking to the garden stores for sale or exchanging goods.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in December 2014 in Milan / Italy and finished in Taipei / Taiwan in May 2016.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Applying the new technologies of Silicone Nitride Ceramic Heating Element and Brushless Motor together with the engineering plastic materials of PBT and PC designed an unique mechanical structure, such as Mixing Chamber, Screw Cylinder, Inner Tube and Compost Pellet Holder. Also, developed an extraordinary software to control the motion of brushless motor and heater to optimize power consumption for energy efficiency. The entire structure of the Green Eater is waterproof, so user can wash it directly in the sink, offer low maintenance and durability, becoming a green friendly product.

Dimensions: 210 ( L ) mm X 210 ( W ) mm x 418 (H ) mm Power Input: 120V, 60 Hz, or 230V, 50 Hz. Power Consumption: 1.2 Amp on 120V, 0.6 Amp on 230V.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
In the research finding lots of food waste most go to the landfill, waste incinerator and food waste disposer. But as we know, the landfill would pollute or poison the environment; the waste incinerator would consume oil and generate air pollution; the waste disposer would consume electricity and add the load of waste water treatment. In the market, the traditional food waste composting machines use ferment method that take several weeks to decompose food waste. Therefore, we spent a lot of time on the research to find a new solution and technology for making food waste to become compost pellets in the period of two to three hours. Also, researched how to shatter food waste to become small size of fragments, how to compress fragments to convert into compost pallets and involved lots of time on developing software to operate the Green Eater.

CHALLENGE:
The mechanical engineering structures and operating software are the hardest part, and how to design an innovative style form to coordinate with housing environment, how to convert food waste into the valuable stuff to benefit our natural cycles are a challenge too.
