| DESIGN NAME: Old House in Wabi-Sabi PRIMARY FUNCTION: House INSPIRATION: In Japanese, Wabi-Sabi means to get rid of the unnecessary, and to pursue essence of nature. It doesn’t mean to change its origin. It means to make it pure and insert vitality. We use simple and natural tactics to retain the concept of tradition to extol the retention of irregularities and appreciate the performance of essence which brings peaceful. This could bring out the inner soul. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: In this case, we stay our attitude of retaining the good old things, but giving new life to design the house. Respect the original interior condition and natural view, we make a great effort to fuse new elements into it. Open area brings in the outdoor landscape. The design tactic is used to bring the tone of green into the building. Besides, we also solved the problem of strong sunlight when sunset, at the same time enrich the view of patio. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The 50-year-old brick structure became the main issue of this project. In order to strengthen the structure, five H-beams steel has been used as the window frame, combine the concept of aesthetics and mechanics, and also become the structure that can afford changing while time passes. The second issue of designing this house is to convince the occupants to keep the original objects. Keeping the original wall highlights the humanities sense under the passage of time. The texture of trunk and maple with similar color create a harmonious atmosphere. We tried hard to make effort keeping the balance of new and old. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: We want to emphasize the beauty of the old building, and let the client remember and inherit under the respect of time traces. We choose nature materials such as stones, wood, metal and concrete to maintain the atmosphere of an old house. Besides, new materials was seldom be used. Furthermore, we focus on the interaction amongst family members. Deep balconies and plants are the main elements to regulate climate, especially the subtropical climate in Taiwan. Windows and openings were collocated to create beautiful views in all spaces. The green plants can also keep inhabitant’s privacy. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: To make a perfect integration of a 210 m2, three floors height building, we have to take advantage of the difference height of ceiling, extend the indoor visual to substitute the substance compartment, imply a sense of different area. The extend of wooden deck and cabinet make connection between indoor and outdoor, link both visual and usage behavior. Simple modeling and raw materials, decrease the use of garnish, integrate into natural landscape. Beauty changes with time. When time and space combine together, the beauty and poetic feeling will show up. It is the original intention of the whole design. The building is located on the corner of the community. We hope to make the house blend in and share the harmonious atmosphere with the neighborhood by keeping the balance of old and new. CHALLENGE: Keeping the original method not only reflect on the patio, the same attitude had been used on architecture and interior design. We use natural and simple way to put some new design elements into the old house, and also emphasize the beauty of an old building could be remember and inherit under the respect of natural traces.
