| DESIGN NAME: The Cord Roll PRIMARY FUNCTION: Smartphone Cord Wallet INSPIRATION: Fed up with his mobile-charging cable and earphones getting tangled every time he travelled with them, Australian QANTAS international pilot Shane Thompson unleashed his inner Tom Ford and, using a home sewing machine, stitched up the Cord Roll – a wallet-like roll-up pouch – to keep his cables under control. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The overriding theme that guided the genesis of The Cord Roll is intuitive design in both form and function. Its form communicates its function so clearly that the how-to manual doesn’t need to exist. In today’s hyper-connected world, we all have a smartphone. This drives a key consumer need; to have a phone that is charged. The Cord Roll’s design ensures that the cables & earphones you need are always carried, always secured, and always free from entanglement. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The Cord Roll is designed to include as few points of failure as possible. It has a very natural flow of use and, owing to the upholstery-grade thread & points of hand-stitching, a generational lifetime can be expected. Leather was chosen as it ages beautifully and tells a story. For a travel accessory this was ideal. It also addressed the requirement to be minimal in nature, removing the need for hemming as leather does not fray. Finally, it is extremely durable, which addressed the important requirements of integrity and longevity. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: - TAGS: everydaycarry, edc, travel, travelessentials, organisation, organised, leather, handmade RESEARCH ABSTRACT: - CHALLENGE: Notwithstanding the obvious lack of any formal design qualification, the main design challenge was to authentically deliver the Cord Roll’s promise – to solve a global frustration through attention to form and function, avoiding the design verbosity commonly found in lazy, thoughtless design. NAME: Afternoons with Albert PROFILE: Afternoons with Albert is me, Shane Thompson. But it all started with Albert, so he really is part of this, too. As a kid, I treasured spending my Sunday afternoons with my grandfather Albert in his shed. He was a great carpenter and tinkerer, and we were forever building furniture for the family or inventing things to make life easier around the home. While many things have changed since then – I became an airline pilot (another boy’s dream), I never lost that passion of the young me. As an adult I am still consumed with how we can do things better and more easily. I still have a love for design and aesthetics. And my travelling and experiencing other cultures has become invaluable fuel for ideas and the creativity Albert instilled in me. Afternoons with Albert is raw, it's real - it’s design for a life well lived. Albert believed form, function and beauty needed to come together in all that we created. He fiercely believed that the love and skill put into our designs and creations made live easier and more beautiful for whoever used them. And I think Albert was right. Therefore his love for function, skill and style live on in our lifestyle-wares that transform the moments of your everyday life. |
